Android overtakes iPhone in US marketshare

Great Scott! Apple's iPhone is now being outsold by Android in the United States. NPD Group, a market research company, reports that in Q1 2010, Android became the second most installed mobile phone OS in the United States. Currently leading the pack is RIM's BlackBerry OS at 36% market share, and while it's still trailing by a bit, Android holds a strong 28% of the mobile OS marketshare. Glumly, in third sits Apple with 21% market share.
Honestly, this should come as no surprise is because like BlackBerry, Android can be found on every major US carrier while the iPhone is still exclusive to AT&T. Not only can Android be found on countless carriers, it can also be found in many different form factors; an all touchscreen device, slide-out keyboard style, backwards flipping full-QWERTY strangeness, and I'm sure we will see more to come down the road. It will be interesting to see how the market will play out with HP's taking Palm under their wing and harvesting webOS, the next generation iPhone hitting the market soon, and with BlackBerry 6 hitting the market in the not-too-distant future. Will RIM be able to stand its ground against the rapidly growing giant that is Android? Only time will tell.
