Apple campus

After the news was released by NPD that Android had overtaken the iPhone OS in US marketshare, it seemed like only a matter of time before Apple countered with their response.

Today, Apple spokesperson Natalie Harrison retaliated by stating that the NPD survey was "...a very limited report on 150,000 US consumers responding to an online survey and does not account for the more than 85 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide."  Harrison went on to say that according to the International Data Corporation, the iPhone has a 16.1 percent marketshare worldwide, which exceeds that of the Android OS, and that the release of iPhone OS 4 this summer will help Apple distance itself from its competitors.

There are many factors to consider when digesting all of this information, like the fact that the iPhone is only available on AT&T while there are Android devices on every major US carrier.  Also, some carriers like Verizon have buy one, get one deals on their smartphones that can help dramatically increase sales of Android devices and would never be available for the iPhone.
