If you're not familiar with Google Voice, it's actually a really cool service provided by Google with features such as free text messaging, a free phone number, voicemail transcription and more.  Google Voice is currently available by invitation only and for those of us who have it, we know how the waiting process goes.  I was lucky in that it only took me a few days once I signed up, but I know others who had to wait weeks to get their invites.

In any case, there's good news for those of you who have been waiting (and anyone else that wants to give it a run).  If you are a student, or have access to an email account ending in .edu (yes, that means you, teachers and school administrators) Google will now be prioritizing invites to the aforementioned individuals, and claim that if you submit an email address to google.com/voice/students you will receive your invite within 24-hours, which is much better than the current wait.

This is an interesting approach to getting Google Voice in the hands of the nation's youth.  But it makes sense considering students will always be the future, and in today's technology-driven age, students have and make use of technology more than anyone else, so who better to promote Google Voice?  It only takes a few students, and before you know it, Google Voice invites will come at a premium.
