Motorola Flipout for AT&T details and impressions come to light

Motorola Flipout open

We heard a rumor all the way back in June that Motorola's Flipout would be making its way to AT&T, and a little over a week ago we saw a leak of what is likely that very device.  Today, we've got more info on the handset for you interested buyers.  The folks at Android Central have posted some specs and first impressions, and while there still isn't any release or pricing info, I'm glad to learn anything I can when it comes to a new Android device.  Here's the skinny on the Flipout from AC:

  • The phone runs the updated version of Motoblur 1.5 -- but it's not what you find on the Droid X and Droid 2.
  • The operating system is Android 2.1 (update1, we presume).
  • Widgets are resizeable, like on the Droid X and Droid 2.
  • There are filtering options for your social networks, so you're not completely deluged with information.
  • The 2.8-inch screen (at the old-school 320x240 resolution) is described as "garbage" with a low, low 120 pixels per inch. (Hey, it's not mean to be high-end.)
  • That said, the body of the phone and build quality are said to be top-notch, which is no surprise for Motorola. We may not like the design, but, dammit, they can certainly build things well.
  • Benchmarks:  26FPS on nenamark, 444 on quadrant, 5.8MFlops on linpack, but it's topping out on gears and 2dfps at 30FPS.
  • The phone is pretty speedy, with its OMAP processor running at 720MHz and PowerVR SGX 530 GPU.
  • This is AT&T we're talking about, so there is no app sideloading, but like the Backflip and Aria and Captivate, you can use ADB or the Android Sideload Wonder Machine to install the .apk files.
  • Google Navigation is in, and Google is the default search, unlike on the Backflip. Yahoo is the homepage, but that is changed easily enough.

As you can see, the Flipout is by no means a state of the art, high-end device, but more of a mid-range handset meant for texting fans and teens looking for a fashionable phone.  The last leak we saw had the device sporting an orange back, and now we have a photo of the phone with a blue back, so it's looking likely that there will be interchangeable backs for the Flipout, making it even more attractive for a stylish crowd.  The physical QWERTY keyboard is a welcome addition, and should definitely help the Flipout garner some attention from those of us that prefer a more tactile, button-filled experience.  So, has the interchangeable back covers and keyboard propelled the Flipout to the top of your must-have Android list?
