WiFi calling finally coming to T-Mobile Android devicesAlex Wagner - Deputy Managing Editor, News Desk
WiFi calling has been a big feature for T-Mobile customers who have a lackluster cell signal at their home, but the trait has been missing from T-Mo's Android devices. A recent leak said that that would change with upcoming Android phones, and today T-Mobile made it nice and official for us. The new T-Mobile myTouch and the Motorola DEFY will be the inaugural members of Android's WiFi calling club, although T-Mo says that the feature is expected to appear on a "growing selection" of their Android devices in the coming months. You can check out the full press release below.
In this age of carriers releasing femtocells to make up for pockets of poor coverage, I'm glad to see T-Mobile expanding the number of products with WiFi calling. While a femtocell is nice, some people simply don't want to pay the carrier for a device that makes up for a weak signal. WiFi calling is free if you have a phone that supports it, and T-Mobile seems committed to expanding the number of devices that do. Let's just hope that that expansion includes existing devices and not just new phones as they're being released. After all, I'm sure customers that recently upgraded to a device like a Motorola CHARM or myTouch 3G Slide would like to get in on the WiFi calling goodness, too.
