Nexus One, Nexus S begin receiving Android 2.3.3 over the air

Google Nexus S Nexus One Gingerbread tweet

Exactly one week ago, we heard that the Nexus One would soon be bumped up to Android 2.3 soon, and that's what happened tonight. According to the official Google Nexus Twitter account, Android 2.3.3 is beginning to roll out over the air to both the Nexus One and the Nexus S. Besides finally bringing the N1 up to the latest Android goodness, the upgrade is said to finally rid the Nexus S of its nasty rebooting problem and include the ability to write NFC tags, as well. Additionally, the update axes the ability to sync contacts with Facebook friend info on the Nexus S. Google says that it cut the feature because the Facebook app doesn't use Android's contacts API or allow users to export contact data from the device. The Facebook contact sync will only be removed from the Nexus S and "future lead devices," though, so it appears that N1 owners will retain the feature for now.

Getting Gingerbread to the Nexus One may have taken a little longer than many of us expected (especially compared to the Froyo update), but it's great to finally see the update arrive and bring so many fixes along with it. As with most OTA updates, Google notes that it could take "a few weeks" for 2.3.3 to roll out to all devices, so don't be alarmed if you haven't gotten the update in the time it's taken to read this post. When your Nexus One or Nexus S does get upgraded, be sure to let us know!
