Sandwiched in-between the BBX, DROID RAZR, and Galaxy Nexus events, Apple has announced its earnings for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year. During the three-month period ending September 24th, Apple earned a total revenue of $28.27 billion and a net profit of $6.62 billion, up from $20.34 billion and $4.31 billion figures reported in Q4 2010 but down from the $28.57 billion and $7.31 billion numbers from Q3 2011. Moving on to sales, the Cupertino firm sold 17.07 million iPhones in Q4 2011, a 21 percent growth year over year but a decrease from the 20.34 million sold in Q3 2011. Sales of the iPad grew to 11.2 million, a 166 percent increase from Q3 2010, and sales of the iPod dropped to 6.62 million, a decrease of 27 percent year over year.
Overall it looks like Apple had another good quarter, despite the fact that iPhone sales dropped over three million from the previous quarter. That decrease isn't a shock, though, as many potential iPhone customers likely shied away from making a purchase due to the rumors that a new handset was just around the corner. I don't know about you, but I'd like to see Apple share sales figures for the different kinds of iPods that it sells, mostly just to find out how many iPod classics have been sold. Anyway! CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 fourth quarter ended September 24, 2011. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $28.27 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.3 percent compared to 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 63 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The Company sold 17.07 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 21 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 11.12 million iPads during the quarter, a 166 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 6.62 million iPods, a 27 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
