U.S. Cellular expands list of upcoming LTE markets, announces 4G mobile hotspotAlex Wagner - Senior News Editor
U.S. Cellular has been talking up some of the markets that'll be part of its initial 4G LTE rollout for some time now, but today the carrier has offered up details on some of the markets that'll gain access to U.S. Cellular LTE later in 2012. In the second half of this year, U.S. Cellular says that more than 3,600 towns will become part of its 4G LTE network, and a total of 54 percent of USCC customers are expected to have LTE coverage by the time that 2012 wraps up. The additional cities that'll be joining the fold this year can be found in Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. U.S. Cellular also mentioned some specific markets that'll be gaining 4G LTE coverage in 2012:
- Rockford and Peoria, Ill.
- Columbia and Jefferson City, Mo.
- Manchester, N.H.
- Wilmington and Jacksonville, N.C.
- Tulsa, Okla.
- Medford, Ore.
- Knoxville, Tenn.
- Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va.
- Yakima and the Tri-Cities, Wash.
- Morgantown, W. Va.
- LaCrosse and Beloit, Wis.
In addition to these new markets, U.S. Cellular has also announced that it plans to offer a 4G LTE mobile hotspot made by Samsung, which will allow up to five devices to connect simultaneously. Earlier this month U.S. Cellular revealed that it will launch an LTE-enabled version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in March and the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator in April. Additional 4G LTE devices are expected to be announced at a later date.
Sounds good, right U.S. Cellular folks? We've yet to actually get a chance to try out U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network, but we're glad to see another carrier gearing up to spread some LTE goodness. Here's to hoping we get more details on USCC's 4G LTE rollout and the devices that'll be accessing the network sooner rather than later.
