NVIDIA Tegra roadmap Logan, Parker

NVIDIA formally took the wraps off of its new Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i mobile processors in January and February, respectively, and now its using the month of March to share a few tidbits of information on the chips that come after the T4 on its roadmap. First up is the Logan, a name we've seen on NVIDIA roadmaps before. The Logan chip is expected to pack a Kepler GPU and CUDA, NVIDIA's programming model that allows for increased chip performance by utilizing the GPU. AnandTech has been told that we should start seeing samples of the Logan processor in 2013, with appearances in production hardware expected to begin in early 2014.

Looking even further into the future, we've got the Parker. This processor will take advantage of NVIDIA's new CPU codenamed Denver, which will include 64-bit capabilities, as well as a new GPU that's codenamed Maxwell. There's not yet an exact timeframe in which we can expect to see Parker arriving in consumer devices, but the chip on NVIDIA's roadmap is resting above a "2015," meaning that it'll be a while before we're able to put this thing to the test.

While we've yet to see NVIDIA's new Tegra 4 and Tegra 4i processors appear in any consumer hardware, it's still interesting to get a peek at what NVIDIA has up its sleeve for the coming years. Despite the fact that we've only seen a handful of Tegra-powered smartphones to date, with NVIDIA's chips appearing more frequently in tablets than in handsets, but the company definitely still has big plans for mobile. The Tegra 4i and its integrated 4G LTE modem could help get NVIDIA inside some more devices in the future, though, and afterward NVIDIA will likely allow us to get better acquainted with its friend Logan.
