In the past few weeks we've gotten third quarter 2012 earnings reports from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, and today it's T-Mobile's turn in the quarterly results spotlight.
This morning the magenta carrier shared its Q3 2013 earnings, announcing that it added a total of 1.023 million customers during the three-month period. That figure includes 648,000 postpaid additions as well as 24,000 prepaid adds. At the end of Q3 2013, T-Mobile was home to more than 45 million subscribers. T-Mo also revealed today that it's enrolled 2.2 million customers in its JUMP! upgrade program since July 2013.
Smartphone sales for the quarter finished a 5.6 million units, an increase from 4.3 million units in Q2 2013 and 2.3 million in Q3 2012. Smartphones made up 88 percent of units sold and 98 percent of phones sold during the quarter. T-Mobile points to ongoing sales of the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S 4 as well as the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c as the drivers behind its handset sales growth.
T-Mobile service revenues grew to $5.1 billion in Q3 2013, up 8 percent from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, total revenues finished at $6.7 billion, an increase from $6.2 billion in Q2 2013. T-Mobile says that this growth is due to both its acquisition of MetroPCS as well as its postpaid customer adds.
On the MetroPCS side of things, T-Mobile reports that it has transitioned over 1.5 million MetroPCS customers over to the T-Mo network. The carrier expects to expand the MetroPCS brand to 15 new markets on Nov. 21, bringing the total number of additional MetroPCS markets up to 30.
T-Mobile also plans to continue to repurpose MetroPCS's LTE spectrum for to help increase the channel size of its own LTE network before the end of the year. Details on those expansion plans are light, but New York City is one of the locales when the spectrum recycle will take place.
Overall it sounds like T-Mobile had itself another nice quarter. The addition of another million customers is a big deal for the magenta operator, especially when you consider that in Q3 2012, it only managed to add 160,000 subscribers. T-Mo expects to finish 2013 strong, too, saying that it's increased its expected postpaid net additions for the year from 1.0-1.2 million up to 1.6-1.8 million thanks to the popularity of its Simple Choice plan and Uncarrier strategy.
T-Mobile is holding a conference call to further discuss its Q3 2013 earnings at 9:00 a.m. EST this morning. Stay tuned and I'll update you with any additional tidbits of info that CEO John Legere and Co. have to share.
UPDATE: T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert mentioned during the Q3 2013 earnings call that Apple's iPhone made up approximately 15 percent of the carrier's smartphone sales during the quarter.
