New Tizen hardware to be shown off at Mobile World Congress 2014

Tizen 3.0 Samsung Galaxy S 4

We've been treated to several early peeks at Tizen during its development, but because the Intel and Samsung-backed OS has yet to appear on any commercially-available mobile hardware, we haven't had the chance to give it a spin for ourselves. It sounds like the platform is finally ready to make its big debut, though, as Tizen has sent out invitations to an event at Mobile World Congress on Feb. 23 at which devices running the new OS will be put on display.

There's no word yet on the type of Tizen hardware will be shown at MWC 2014. As Engadget notes, though the location of the event and the recent rumor that Samsung's first Tizen hardware is slated to debut in 2014 means that there's a strong possibility that smartphones will be involved in the upcoming event.

Tizen is an open source, Linux-based OS that's meant to run on a variety of hardware, including smartphones, tablets, netbooks and smart TVs. There haven't been any official announcements regarding the first mobile devices that'll come to market with Tizen in tow, but so far we've seen the OS being tested on Galaxy S IIIs and S 4s, which isn't a surprise considering that Samsung is one of the platform's biggest backers. We'll just have to wait and see if Samsung actually ends up re-releasing some of its existing hardware with Tizen in tow, but the good news is that that wait won't be long.

Are you interested in checking out Tizen once the platform finally makes its retail debut?
