Nvidia Tegra K1 official

NVIDIA kicked off the CES 2014 festivities tonight with a press conference hosted by CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, and as many folks expected, the exec officially took the wraps off of NVIDIA's new Tegra chip. Dubbed the Tegra K1, the new mobile processor is 192-core "Super Chip" that's based on NVIDIA's Kepler GPU architecture. To compare, the Tegra 4 features 72 GPU cores.

Huang touted the Tegra K1's gaming capabilities, showing the chip's ability to run Unreal Engine 4, which is behind hundreds of PC and console games that are currently on the market. NVIDIA went on to claim that the Tegra K1 offers faster performance than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Power isn't the only focus of the K1, though, as NVIDIA says that the Kepler GPU at its heart is 1.5 times more efficient that other mobile GPUs.

The Tegra K1 will come to market in two versions that are pin-to-pin compatible. While both use the 192-core NVIDIA Kepler GPU, the first model will sport a 32-bit quad-core, 4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex A15 CPU, while the second will utilize an NVIDIA-designed 64-bit dual Super Core CPU that's codenamed "Denver" and is based on the ARMv8 architecture. The 32-bit unit is expected to begin appearing in devices in the first half of 2014, with the 64-bit variant slated to arrive in the second half of the year.
