Samsung Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO tablets official with 2560x1600 displays, Android 4.4Alex Wagner - Editorial Director of News and Content
Yesterday Samsung prematurely outed its new Galaxy NotePRO and Galaxy TabPRO hardware by putting up its CES 2014 banner a bit ahead of its actual event. Details on the devices were light at that time, though, so that's why it's still interesting to get hold of Samsung's official announcements for all of its new tablet hardware.
Samsung today revealed four new tablet members of its Galaxy family. One is an S Pen-toting Galaxy NotePRO model, while the other three units are stylus-less Galaxy TabPRO variants. Here's the rundown on the entire quartet:
- Samsung Galaxy NotePRO: Up front is a 12.2-inch 2560x1600 Super Clear LCD display and 2-megapixel camera, and around back lives an 8-megapixel shooter. Sandwich inside the new NotePRO is 3GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB storage, a microSD card slot and a 9500mAH battery. The processor that powers the NotePRO will vary depending on its connectivity: The Wi-Fi-only and 3G models will come with an Exynos 5 Octa chip (1.9GHz quad-core and 1.3GHz quad-core) while the LTE-enabled version features a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800.
- Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 12.2-inch: As you might've guessed, this unit is packing a 12.2-inch 2560x1600 Super Clear LCD display, just like its NotePRO sibling. Also like the new Note, the 12.2-inch TabPRO packs an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing shooter, 3GB RAM, 32GB/64GB storage and a microSD slot for additional space. The shared features don't end there, as both 12.2-inch tablets share similar chipset configurations and batteries as well.
- Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 10.1-inch: The medium-sized member of this new tablet group sports a 10.1-inch 2560x1600 Super Clear LCD screen, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, 2GB RAM, 16GB/32GB storage, a microSD card slot and an 8220mAh battery. Once again, the chipset powering the unit will vary depending on its wireless connectivity, with the Wi-Fi and 3G models sporting an Exynos 5 Octa and the LTE variant packing a quad-core Snapdragon 800 at its heart.
- Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4-inch: Rounding out Samsung's new tablet hardware, this particular Galaxy TabPRO features an 8.4-inch 2560x1600 Super Clear LCD display, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, 2GB RAM, 16GB/32GB storage and a 4800mAh battery. Expect the 8.4-inch Galaxy TabPRO to come to market with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 in tow.
All four tablets will come preloaded with Android 4.4 KitKat running alongside custom Samsung software. Known as the Magazine UX, the overlay is optimized for use on a large display and allows users to arrange a dashboard with their favorite content, news feeds, automatic updates and frequently-used apps.
Customers that opt for the big ol' 12.2-inch Galaxy NotePRO or Galaxy TabPRO models will also receive an Ultimate User Content Gift Package that Samsung says includes around $700 worth of content. The bundle includes goodies like a 12-month subscription to Bloomberg Businessweek+, 50GB of free Dropbox storage for 2 years, a free 12-week subscription to the New York Times and a free download of the Sketchbook Pro app.
Samsung says that its new Galaxy NotePRO and Galaxy TabPRO lineups will begin rolling out globally in Q1 2014. No pricing details have been announced, but given their "PRO" descriptors and super high-res displays, the slates likely won't come cheap. The pixel density enthusiasts out there may not care, though, as the 2560x1600 screens found on these units might just end up putting them in a trance that'll leave them with a full shopping bag and an lighter wallet.
