Nokia Normandy renders

We've seen quite a few Nokia Normandy leaks to date that've given us peeks at its different color options, the rest of its hardware and the custom version of Android that's rumored to be powering it. Tonight we've got another Normandy leak to add to the list, but this one is different because rather than being a picture or video of the phone itself, it's a rumor about the device's name.

A tweet sent out by prolific leakster @evleaks tonight read "Project Normandy = Nokia X," suggesting that the Android-powered device could ultimately trade in its Normandy codename for the moniker "Nokia X." No other details about the device were given.

Nokia's Normandy is rumored to be a low-cost device similar to its existing Asha line, but with the ability to run a wider range of full-on smartphone apps. It'd be able to do so thanks to the Android software that'd reportedly power the phone. We've seen in leaked images that the version of Android running on the Normandy is heavily customized, looking a bit like a mashup of Windows Phone and the Nokia Asha software.

While the Normandy is rumored to be kicking around inside Nokia's labs with a release targeted for 2014, Microsoft's impending acquisition of Nokia's Devices & Services division has made it unclear whether or not the Normandy will actually make it to market. It's possible that we could see the Normandy at Nokia's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona next month, but for now the Normandy's fate is very much in the air. The good news is that, with Nokia's MWC event taking place at the end of February and Microsoft's acquisition expected to close in Q1, it shouldn't be long before we finally find out what will become of Nokia's Android-powered handset.
