Pebble appstore to begin rolling out on Monday, Feb. 3 [UPDATED]Alex Wagner - Editorial Director of News and Content
Pebble announced near the end of last year that it would be launching an official appstore for its smartwatch in early 2014 that'd serve as a one-stop shop for new apps and watch faces. Tonight there's some good news for Pebble owners looking forward to the appstore's launch, because we've got a slightly more precise timeframe for when the shop will open its virtual doors.
Pebble Product Evangelist Myriam Joire revealed tonight that the official Pebble appstore is ready for launch and will begin rolling out to users on Monday, Feb. 3. Pebble has previously said that the appstore will be rolled into its official Android and iOS apps and that it'll include six different app categories: Daily, Remotes, Sports & Fitness, Notifications, Tools & Utilities and Games.
The past few months have been pretty big for Pebble. The company added iOS 7 Notification Center support to its smartwatch and launched an update with a Do Not Disturb mode in the final months of 2013, and more recently it began selling the Pebble Steel, a premium version of its smartwatch with a stainless steel band and charging indicator.
Now the Pebble appstore is nearly ready to go, which is great news for both Pebble and its users. There are already a couple of different places for Pebble smartwatch owners to download new apps and watchfaces, but the Pebble appstore is not only an official source for those types of downloads, it'll also be easily accessible since it'll be integrated into the Pebble Android and iOS apps themselves.
Do you own a Pebble smartwatch? If so, what are some of your favorite apps and watch faces?
UPDATE: Just as promised, the Pebble appstore is going live today. The appstore is built directly into the official Pebble apps for Android and iOS, the latter of which Pebble says is now rolling out to the App Store and can be downloaded right here. Pebble adds that the updated Android app will be live "very, very soon." At launch, the Pebble appstore offers more than 1000 apps and watchfaces.
UPDATE 2: Pebble just announced the release of a new beta version of the Pebble for Android app that includes the Pebble appstore. The company notes that there are a few issues with the app that need to be ironed out, including some issues with the pairing process. If you're itching to do get the Pebble appstore running on your Android phone and just can't wait for the public rollout, though, you can snag the .apk file for the new Pebble for Android app right here.
