There probably will be cases, but it's meant that each module has its own look, so covering them up might defeat that purpose. The modules themselves and overall platform is waterproof, but as to whether or not the USB port/headphone jack is is to be determined. Tablets haven't been announced but there is a phablet model, not sure if they will do a tablet though. It would be a lot of work to make that huge slate modular. As for the charging port, the device itself will have one built into the frame, but since this is open source I'm sure module makers will have the freedom to include USB, micro usb and whatever other interfaces they deem needed on their module. But whether or not they decide that's needed is-again-up to the person/company making the module. I wouldn't hold my breath for it though, as that would take up a lot of space on an already small workspace, and to have more than 1 module with its own unique port would end up looking bad imo. So again, not sure if Google will allow it or if they'll give the devs 100% freedom in that area too. Likely not, but who knows. And in terms of working prototypes to test on, the final iteration of Android that will support modular components isn't expected until early Q2 2015 and the final production ready prototype design isn't expected to be ready until Q1, so while there is a modular development kit out now, I'm not sure people will actually be able to test out their modules until at least Q1. Hope that info helps!

They should have tried a 6" phablet as a lot of their content serves that. The nexus 6 was a clever release by Google. To highlight a few points, not treading on their partners toes with phones undercutting into their primary market of 5" devices. Also phablet market at 6" is up for grabs. Amazon needs to forget 5" and go for 6".

5.9 inch! They're going after the nexus 6, its a great screen size IMO because that display would make for a great multi tablet.

Specs matters for low-mid range phones as we get more functionality with better hardware but you are right with high end phones that just more numbers don't guarantee the usefulness of them but rather consume more resources space, battery etc. As for crazy specs, i prefer design with usefulness over anything else.. so personally i like 4.5 - 4.7in phones with great design and 720p resolution.

I'm using a Moto G G LTE that I bought contract free and unlocked directly from Motorola. Specs wise, it isn't on the level of some of the flagships. That said, in all practical ways, it works just as well, and at a fraction of the price. My vision wouldn't be able to tell a QHD display unless I was told it was one, so I don't need that. My display is good, battery life is good, and with a quad core processor, it is fast enough. Also, it was ironic fun that my friend with his Galaxy S4 could barely get a signal and I was getting three bars when we were at a theme park in a weak coverage area for AT&T, which we both have. I think a big battery and a strong antenna are tops. A removable battery would also be a good thing. All the specs in the world are meaningless if you can't connect and don't have any endurance.

I think battery life is what they should be trying to work on more. Phones are fastest enough right now. I want a phone that can get me through 2 solid days with heavy usage. I have the G2 and it got me through a day at first but now it only lasts about 2/3 of a day or much less if I use it really heavily.

I can't wait for Project Ara! it's the future. I have some questions. Will there be cases for it? What about it being waterproof? I thought a selling point was you only replace the parts that are broken, if dunked in water, will you have to buy brand new everything? Will google make tablets too? Will you be able to change the charging port? So you can have a micro usb, micro usb 3.0, maybe even lightning port? Well there are more questions than answers right now... I am still excited for this project, when will google release testable versions to developers?

Douglas Prevo
Douglas Prevo commented on the article "Amazon hit with $170 million charge for Fire phone, including $83 million in unsold inventory"
The best way to assure the Fire 2 to not be a flop is to not release a phone to a saturated market with a price point you can't possibly compete at. The $200 price point is not a good entry point for a walled garden, when there are superior devices already in that arena running the same services. If you want a walled garden you will end up with a $200 iPhone, if you already have a flagship device on Android, you certainly aren't going to shoot yourself in the foot and put yourself behind the Amazon wall since they run a smaller app market. Their best market is first time smartphone buyers, those people are not flagship buyers.
