So you’ve worked hard over the last “x” amount of months building your website to gain traffic either by continually attracting new and hopefully repeat visitors through providing valuable content. Now you figure it is time to start turning your operation into a full fledged money making business. Now what?

You have several options when it comes to utilizing the advertising real estate on your website, but you’re not sure what the best route to take is. Google adsense, LinkShare, and Commission Junction all offer ways of integrating contextual advertisements. There in lies the problem. Contextual advertisements are only marginally profitable on websites that receive a lot of traffic. This is primarily due to the high cost of generating the traffic in the first place.

There are several reasons why these ads are ineffective:

  •  All of the contextual ads look alike.
  •  High cost of generating the traffic
  •  Low commissions
  •  Clicking on a link usually takes me away from the website I was visiting. 
    •  If I do decide to take a chance then what? 
    •  Where am I going?
    •  When I get there am I going to have to click on yet another link to get the website and so on?
  •  Too much time is spent on navigation.
  •  No images - I consider images to be very important criteria when shopping online. The old saying “a picture is worth a 1000 words”   has never been truer when it comes to online advertising.

It’s no secret that creating an ad that looks like it belongs on your website it is the key to successful advertising. In the recent past this meant you were going to have to set up a co-branded website sometimes with several different vendors. That process usually involves contract negotiations, multiple feeds and other hidden expenses which unfortunately is not always a viable option for the smaller to mid size businesses that is just starting to gain traffic.
