Company Profile: Nextel is part of the Sprint Nextel Corporation, which was officially formed in August 2005 following the successful acquisition of NEXTEL Communications by Sprint Communications for $35 billion. Sprint was founded as The Brown Telephone Company in 1899 in Abilene, KS. Sprint Nextel (aka "Sprint") is now headquartered in Reston, VA.

Unique Features: Push-to-talk service; GPS location services; Business services including mobile Java applications.

Pros: Extensive coverage for voice and high speed data services; Merger with Nextel means free calling between many Sprint and Nextel subscribers; Extensive business services.

Cons: Limited number of handets; Fewer data and entertainment options than available from Sprint; Limited push-to-talk compatibility with Sprint customers.

Technology Used: iDEN network using TDMA-based technology. WiDEN packet-data protocol used for data services.

Coverage: Nationwide. Sprint is planning marketing push in 2008 to convert Nextel users to Sprint's CDMA PCS network. Sprint Nextel plans to absorb Nextel brand into Sprint PCS by 2010.

CALLS SENT DIRECTLY TO VOICE MAIL

The good: FREE INCOMING CALLS IS A GREAT IDEAThe bad: TOO BAD THE MAJORITY OF MY CALLS DO NOT RING ME BUT GO DIRECTLY TO MY VOICE MAIL. TO RECIEVE MY VOICE MAIL I HAVE TO USE MY MINUITES WHICH MAKE MY INCOMING CALLS NO LONGER FREE!!!Summary: WHY AM I PAYING FOR A PLAN THAT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE SERVICES I WAS PROMISED?

NEXTEL CUSTOMER SERVICE TERRIBLE

The good: DIRECT CONNECT PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The bad: OF ALL THE CELL PHONE COMPANIES I HAVE DEALTH WITH, NEXTEL HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, I THOUGHT CINGULAR WAS BAD, I HOPE WHEN SPRINT TAKES OVER IT GETS BETTER.Summary: AVOID NEXTEL IF YOU CAN, I SEE ALLTEL IS ATTEMPING TO GET INTO THE DIRECT CONNECT BUISNESS, I CERTAINLY HOPE SOMEONE WITH BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE, GETS INTO THE DIRECT CONNECT BUISNESS.

My Nextel Ordeal

The good: The service was goodThe bad: Service center 30 miles away. They did not have a replacement phone for me and I was without phone service during the swap of phones. The phone was less than a year old, the replacement phone was refurbished and cost me $30.00 after all the aggravation I ensued. They tried to charge me $35.00 dollars; eventhough, the website said $30.00. The website also said 1 hour turnaround time for replacement of phones, After an unpleasant telephone encounter with them, they changed the price to $30,00.Summary: I would not recommend Nextel to anyone; for a matter of fact, I would highly discourage anyone from contracting with Nextel.

The good: The radio portion of the phone when you have the service to use it!The bad: I have had three company owned stores in the Orlando area tell me the reason why our service is so bad is because the growth in the area is moving to fast. Thats not my problem! By God they want thier money at the end of every month but will not fix the problem. As far as having your phone for emergencys HA HA HA. During the Hurricanes last year The service was completely gone for days even before the hurricanes hit! BUT, Orange county officals who also have nextels had complete service......:( Summary: Going with Nextel is like a permenant Verizon commercial.CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ? ? ?
