Product description

Expect the unexpected with the Sony Ericsson S500i slider phone, which features unique external light effects and visual display accents. Hidden illumination appears to highlight a certain event and the keypad glows with energy when the slim slider is opened. The display themes can also change when you want--with the seasons, as day turns to night or when the weekend begins. Featured in a Mysterious Green, the quad-band S500i is nicely slim at just 14mm (0.55 inches) thin and it boasts a brightly colorful 2-inch LCD with support for 256K colors. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, multi-format digital audio player, Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion, and Bluetooth stereo music streaming.

This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). Powered by GPRS/EDGE Class 10 (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) technology, this phone makes information exchange a breeze by offering immediate mobile connectivity. It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.

The Mysterious Green S500i includes themes and colors that change with the time of day and the season.
The S500i brilliant 2-inch display has a QVGA resolution (240 x 320 pixels) with 256K colors, perfect for its emphasis on beautiful imagery. It comes with three themes to choose from: Clarity, Day & Night, and Everchanging. The latter changes the phone's animated wallpapers and illuminated color menus as day turns to night and as the months change on the calendar.

The S500i phone offers a full-function Walkman digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files. Other Walkman features include a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off, and Disc2Phone software for easy transfer of song files between phone and PC.

Easily pocketable, the S500i measures 0.55 inches thin and weighs just 3.3 ounces.
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.

The built-in 2.0 megapixel camera captures stills and video--and playback of video or still pictures is only limited to the memory card size. Picture effects and custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be setup to fit your personality. It provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC (either using USB or Bluetooth). And the S500i makes it easy to send snapped photos directly to a blog or an online photo, complete with text.

The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages.

The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks on your PC with the phone.

Other features include:

  • Up to 1000 contact entries, each with five number fields
  • Java support for online and offline 3D games (preloaded games include PacMan and Ms. PacMan)
  • USB 2.0 wired connectivity with mass storage capability
  • PIM functions including calendar, tasks, notes, alarm, calculator, stopwatch, and timer
  • T9 text entry technology
  • 72-chord polyphonic ringtones and MP3 ringtones
  • Digital audio file formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+

User reviews

  Sleek & Stylish....yeah, But..., 2008-07-30
I have owned this phone for over a year now and got to know it very well. Let's look at its pros and cons.

Pros:
1. Design is great: its stylish and sleek design allows for easy placement in pants pocket and very attractive looking while using it as a phone.
2. All of is features are pretty basic, as another reviewer pointed out, but gets the job done. After all this is a phone known as an MP3/camera phone only.
3. Graphics are are awesome! The 3 different Themes available are great in their own individual way and satisfy people's taste for expressing they own style.
4. Both the MP3 player and camera are great tools. Music quality is outstanding, as it should be expected from sony. The camera takes great pictures and has its own photo editing feature...great for picture messaging.
5. Battery life is very good as I use it for music playback all the time while commuting to/from work.

Cons: (My main complaints)
1. Music file transfer is annoying and not that user friendly. Trying to organize my music is a pain as the program does the job for me instead of allowing me to do so.
2. The shuffling of songs is HORRIBLE! With a 4GB card I get about 1,000 songs, which is good, but when in shuffle mode I get songs that had been already played and others go without ever being played for days! Manual search for the one song I want takes place. Sony def. has to work on this one!!!
3. While listening to music and a call or TXT Msg comes in, the music stops for a sec. or two and then resumes. I think Sony has to make it so when using the MP3 player and a call/txt msg comes in the music should continue and the phone should vibrate or play a light beep to announce such event has happened or at least provide the user with the options.

Hope you find this helpful. Please note that no feedback on keypad was offered as this is phone's feature is not for txt msging, that's if you do a lot of texting and web browsing.

Cheers!

AVOID ALL SONY ERICSSON PHONES !!!, 2008-07-19
I am giving this phone and other SONY ERICSSON MODELS a BIG ZERO STAR not because it has any functional flaw in terms of lost signals, voice quality, wifi features etc. Even the phone with latest and greatest of features won't last for more than 6 months because of a very simple flaw in their design.

WITHIN A COUPLE OF MONTHS YOU WONT BE ABLE TO CHARGE IT !! When you put the phone on a charger, the battery charges through a pin-point contact. (LOOK AT THEIR CHARGING INTERFACE CLOSELY AND YOU PROBABLY DON'T HAVE TO READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW). Its literally a pin-point contact. After a couple of months the contact becomes dysfunctional as you would expect from such a contact. Compare it to the charging connector you get on other phones.

Me and my wife bought two SONY phones which has the same interface and the contact broke in 6 months on one of the phones. Luckily both the phones were same so we managed to swap the battery each night before we got a new phone. There is no way out of this dead end except throwing that phone because the battery is perfect but you CANNOT CHARGE it !!...

Imagine someone gave you a Macbook Air with 2 spare batteries but you cannot charge the battery. I don't know what the bozos at SONY were thinking when they designed this phone.

And if that is not enough, they have the same flaky interface for transferring data, or connecting their head phone.

If any sane person reads and understands this review he will NOT BUY SONY ERICCSSON phones which have this NOVEL and CRAPPY interface. I am a big fan of SONY and 90% of all electronic items in my house is SONY, but this is ridiculous. The problem is NOBODY will look at this flaw when buying a cell-phone because its so rare that you cannot charge your cell phone even though the battery is fine !!

  lovely little phone, 2008-06-11
I love this phone I have had it two months now and have the say it is the best phone i have bought so far. The best part is the unusual ever changing themes that always has me pleasantly surprised one color during the day and by eight o'clock another one, then you have butterflies, fire flies and sometimes it is raining, it will change as the month changes it is a really nice feature. The photo and the video are of a good quality and it is easy to pull music to the phone from the computer.
Great little phone I love it.

  Love My New Phone, 2008-06-03
A friend of mine purchased a sony Ericson phone and showed it to me. I thought it looked sharp so I bought one myself but a different model. Small, light weight and a little frilly it to me looks like it is better suited for a girl then a guy.

The phone was super easy to figure out without having to look at the manual. Keys are small, but easy to press. Screen display is bright and colorful. I did not purchase the m2 card yet but it's a must to download more ring tones though the ones on the phone are decent or to be able to store pictures, not a big deal.
I absolutely love the changing themes and light displays all of them are pretty. I set my phone on voice command so it will say the name of those calling if I have the number stored in my phone maybe not for everyone but for now I like it. This phone seems sturdy and not at all fragile but I just got it the other day and bought a cover so I don't scratch it up I want to keep it looking nice.
The only downside is that I bought phone in green (love it) but I also love yellow and they have this phone on ebay in a pearly spring yellow :(-

very good as a phone, 2008-05-08
If you need a phone to be handle with one hand, if your short vision it is not too good, its great because of the bright display and good size letter and numbers, and the size and weight of the phone its excellent.
