$129 Instinct: Sprint Prices Instinct Aggressively to Compete With iPhone

Noah Kravitz

Just got word across the wire that Sprint will be selling Instinct for the super low price of $129.99 after rebate with a two-year contract.  The phone must be used on a Sprint Simply Everything plan, which includes unlimited Web, Email, GPS, Sprint TV Premiere, and other services; Simply Everything plans start at $69.99 for 450 monthly voice minutes.  An unlimited plan is available for $99.99/month.

Frankly, I was expecting Instinct to come in around $199 so this comes as a bit of a shock.  Then again, Sprint made no bones about the fact that they're launching Instinct as a direct competitor to Apple's iPhone, and they even said they were waiting to see how Apple priced the new iPhone 3G before pricint Insinct.  As such, this ultra-aggressive pricing shouldn't be seen as too much of a surprise  (35% cheaper than the entry level $199 iPhone 3G).  Still, that's a lot of phone for $130.  We'll have to see how many folks pony up for it, and how many of those actually mail in those rebate forms.

Use of instinct will require a "Simply Everything" plan, which offers unlimited services such as Web, Email, Sprint TV Premier and Music Premier, and GPS Navigation.  Simply Everything plans range from $69.99/month for 450 voice minutes to $99.99/mo for unlimited talk time.  Instinct will be available starting this Friday, June 20 both directly from Sprint and, apparently, at Best Buy.

So alright ... who's buying one?

Our fancy algorithm says this stuff is related...

Saturday, July 12, 2008the phone instinct is cool but if you don't have the " simply everything plan" the phone would really be just boring except for some applications .???? what would the actual price with out the contract and just the phone ???

Wednesday, June 25, 2008Still on back order. Sprint said they did not know when it would be available. :-(

Tuesday, June 24, 2008After watching the videos, I went to a local Sprint store to test it out. I was amazed at how easy it was to find what I needed, move around, and the main thing...use the keyboard. I ordered mine online on Sunday to get the extra discounts ($50 invoice credit). The email said it would arive in 2-4 business days. Today, I checked the status of my order and it said it was BACKORDERED! I will call them today to see how long the backorder is.

Wednesday, June 18, 2008First, I love all of the unboxings from Noah. second, I have been waiting for the instinct the last 2 months. I am sure it will not be better than the IPhone so everybody, dont be dissapointed. Its going to be another sprint phone, with avarage smaverage sprint service, so again (everybody) dont be dissapointed. Anybody that has dealt with sprint for a long time knows they are trying their best and are not perfect( no matter what they advertise). Other than that? I will be getting the instinct. Cant wait. But if you expect the worst you will never be dissapointed. Hey Noah, keep up the good work. Its not in vain. Peace

Wednesday, June 18, 2008What's the base price of the phone going to be? Currently I am on a family plan but I am eligible for a $150 rebate if I extend my contract another 2 years so I wanted to see who much the phone is gonna cost me. Also, is the vision plan the same as the simply everything plan? With vision I get unlimited internet, tv, picture mail, etc.

Wednesday, June 18, 2008Yup, im so excited about the final price, and I plan on getting a soon as I can. By the way Thank you for the GREAT videos!

Wednesday, June 18, 2008I am currently a Sprint customer and I have a year left on my contract. I contacted the Sprint Store about the Instinct today and they said that I am either going to have to re-up my contract for two years or have to pay around $400-$500, which is the retail price of the instinct. Do I have to renew my contract in order to get the Instinct?
Kyle Scott
Wednesday, June 18, 2008I cant believe this phone is going to be so cheap. Now that I got word on how much the phone is I'm getting SUPER exciting, but then I remember that I got the UpStage last year and not eligable for those rebates. Kind of sucks!!!

Instinct: Sprint Releases Individual Application Updates

Instinct: Sprint Releases Individual Application Updates

At long last Sprint's given the go ahead to its vendors to unleash a slew of application updates upon Instinct owners.  A post on Instinct Insight details the release process, and makes it clear that the actual app updates are coming from the third-party software makers and not directly from Sprint.  Sprint basically opened up the floodgates here and its up to the vendors themselves to decide what to release, when, and how (or so says...

Noah Answers Your Questions - T9 on the Instinct?

Q. Noah, you have very informative videos and think that you are great at your job. I have a question about Sprint's Samsung Instinct. I am fairly efficient with a QWERTY keypad, but I am so much faster on a T9 layout. Is the Samsung Instinct capable of a T9 text entry? I noticed in your YouTube video "Sprint Samsung Instinct vs LG Vu vs iPhone - Long Version " that when you entered the number to text (right past the 10:00 mark), the numbers had...

Noah Answers Your Questions - What is over the air downloading?

Q. In your instinct vs iphone comparison you said with the Instinct you can download 'over the air' and the iphone you cannot. what does that mean and what does it mean to me in a practical sense? Also, what other limitations would this feature, or lack of the feature, cause? A. Over the Air downloading means that you can purchase and download songs and video directly to the phone using your cellular connection.  Apple limits iPhones to...

Instinct or Razr2

I've only had my Instinct for about two weeks but I'm definitely pleased with it so far. It has surpassed any expectations I had since it's release. Updating from a Samsung m500 flip phone, the Instinct is a huge leap in features. It all depends really on what you are used to. So far those who have been disappointed by the Instinct are people who either had a Blackberry, Treo, WinMo smart phone or expected it to be on par with those phones. The...

SAMSUNG INSTINCT

I have a choice of 2 phones the samsung instinct or the razr2 v9m. I know that the razr2 v9m is from motorola and it might be of topic. So i told myself, "Hey why not get the samsung instinct, its touchscreen, and newer than the razr2 v9m". So i called my carrier and i asked the guy which phone i should get, the guy said " they're both really good phones, but you should go with the razr2 v9m because its a tougher and more durable phone, the...

Instinct to support wifi?

Well, this was a real setback when I was looking on a phone on the sprint network. I thought it would have wifi but later found out it doesn't. Is there any talk about it supporting wifi later on? And if they choose to do so, will it be a hardware update, or could they add wifi just by releasing new firmare? Also what are your experiences on sprints evdorev network? is it fast for internet browsing?...

Dare

First of all, STOP SAYING GET THE GLYDE! because the touch screen on that phone is so finiky and unresponsive!  But i would get the Dare because it is on the amazing Verizon Network, and i like the all around look better than the Instinct.  but then again it is a personal chioce. If you need a phone more for work (e-mail, calendar, etc.) then get the instinct, but if not, get the Dare.Hope this helps...

    Mini-Review: BlackBerry 8220

The first ever flip BlackBerry is a winner, so long as you play to its strengths.  While the 8220 is very large for a modern day flip phone, it's lightweight and slick looking enough to trick you into thinking it's a little smaller than it really is.  I've had the 8220 for just under a week now, and I very quickly grew used to carrying it around in my pocket.  No, it's not as thin as a RAZR or as small as a low-end sliderphone,...
