All-in: Inching closer to true 'everything' plans

Yesterday Helio announced a limited-time offer $99/month Unlimited plan that gives you all the voice, messing, and handset-based data (read: no laptop tethering) you can stand for just under one hundred bucks a month.  Today Sprint - Helio's network provider - chimed in with their own offer: Unlimited "Everything" for $119.99/mo, with laptop tethering available as a $30/mo add-on.  (Note that the offer is currently only available in five US markets.)

For the extreme power user, these plans ain't bad.  $100 to never have to worry about how much you talk and text, and to get Email and Web access everywhere on your Helio Ocean or Mysto is a good deal, and $120 for Sprint's package gets you better customer service and a wider choice of devices, including true smartphones.

$150/month with the tethering option will appeal to some corporate and small-business types who are always on the go and need voice and laptop-data access wherever they roam.  But it's still a bit pricey for the "average" power user like yours truly.  I'm thinking the magic number is $99.  If I could get all the talk, text, and Web I wanted, on any device I wanted, with full-on 3G data speeds, for one C-Note a month, I'd be seriously tempted.

Right now I pay $50/month for voice and data from T-Mobile, and usually kick in an extra $5-10 each billing cycle for SMS and other overage charges.  Add to that $30 for my half of my shared Cable Modem at work and another $30 or so for another Cable Modem at home, and I'm over $100 monthly.  Granted, I have a family plan with my wife, so to be fair I'd have to work in the cost of a second voice and text package for her.

I'd also have to work some magic to turn "laptop tethering over 3G" into the equivalent of dedicated Cable Modems at the office and in the house, but you get the idea.  $100/month for Everything makes a lot of sense for the data hungry among us.

I don't think we're all that far from the days of one reasonable monthly fee for voice and data wherever you go, and on whatever devices you choose.  Come 2009, in fact, I expect we'll see cellular broadband really make a push to take some market share from DSL and Cable Modems in the mainstream US market.  Especially if this whole WiMAX thing hurries up and happens, already.

Meantime, if you're in the market for a new voice and data plan, I'd give it another month or so.  With Sprint having already broken the seal, it stands to reason that AT&T and VZW can't be too far off from offering their own $100-ish unlimited monthly plans.

RIP Helio: Virgin Set to Absorb Helio, Close its Doors, Kill off its Brand

RIP Helio: Virgin Set to Absorb Helio, Close its Doors, Kill off its Brand
Looks like the end is near for Helio and all you Helionauts, I'm sad to say.  Ryan Block - the Editor in Chief of Engadget Ryan Block - just reported that Helio store managers are being notified that Virgin will be shuttering the doors on some, or possibly all, of Helio's retail outlets across the country as part of their takeover of the copmany.  Furthermore it looks like Virgin will simply absorb all that is Helio, doing away with the Helio brand in the process. No word yet on when...

OZ2 : Helio Ocean 2 - Photos and Specs

OZ2 : Helio Ocean 2 - Photos and Specs
At long last some news on the forthcoming sequel to Helio's flagship device: The Ocean 2, aka OZ2.  The notable changes seem to be on the inside, as OZ2 rocks the same dual slider form factor as the original and looks to be more or less the same size, if a little more rounded and futuristic looking.  Honestly, it's hard to tell from the sole photo that hit the Web over on Engadget Mobile. What's easier to get a read on are Ocean 2's specs: 3mp camera (up from 2mp), 30 fps video...

Merger? : Helio and Virgin Mobile in Talks to Join Forces

Merger? : Helio and Virgin Mobile in Talks to Join Forces
Could everyone's favorite MVNO be looking to merge with a less cool but bigger and badder MVNO?  Could be. Multiple media outlets have been reporting that Helio (everyone's fave, if you ask me) and Virgin Mobile USA (actually bigger and badder than Helio) are in talks to join forces.  Details are a little bit sketchy right now, but one scenario desribed by The Washington Post has Helio's parent company SK Telecom buying out Virgin Mobile USA and then pouring some cash into the...

CTIA preview: Helio making plans for later in '08; no Ocean 2 just yet

CTIA preview: Helio making plans for later in 08; no Ocean 2 just yet
Helio's been knocked around in the news a bit lately, but a source tells me they're doing alright and planning some big things for later in the year.  Despite having been cut off by former parent company Earthlink earlier this year after costing them $111.3 million in net losses for 2007 (they're now the domain of SK Telecom), Helio  actually outpaces the industry in many key financial categories.  They added over 180,000 subscribers in Q4 '07, representing a 28% growth rate jump...

Helio lowers unlimited plan – Now just $99

Helio lowers unlimited plan – Now just $99
This one comes as a pleasant surprise: Helio has lowered the cost of its unlimited plan from $145 to just $99/month. The plan includes unlimited voice, text/video messaging, GPS services with Google Maps, and 3G data speeds (no laptop tethering option) for surfing the net or checking your emails. With most carriers steering away from unlimited data plans, Helio's offer seems like a great alternative, but be sure you review chapter 10 of their Membership Terms before signing up. ...

Goodbye, Blue Sky: Sky Dayton stepping aside as Helio's CEO

Goodbye, Blue Sky: Sky Dayton stepping aside as Helios CEO
Helio - that MVNO birthed by SK Telecom and Earthlink some three years ago now - announced that Sky Dayton has moved from his post as CEO to become non-executive chairman of the board.  President and COO Wohnee Sull will become the new CEO of Helio; Sull was formerly an executive at SK Telecom. According to Helio's press release, Dayton's M.O. is to run a company for a few years and then step aside from day-to-day operations, so this shift at the company's upper level should not be...
