Department of Justice investigating abuse of power by carriers?

Thanks to recent acquisitions, both Verizon Wireless and AT&T may be under the Department of Justice's spotlight for potential antitrust behavior.  In a move somewhat reminiscent of the Ma Bell days, the DOJ is specifically investigating hardware exclusivity and third-party restrictions that are presently offered on the carrier's networks.  While the companies aren't specifically mentioned by name, it is assumed that Verizon and AT&T will be targeted, due to their size in comparison to other, smaller carriers.

Both carriers claim to have received no notice of any impending investigation, so it's in the early stages, to say the least.  It all goes back to one of the main arguments: would you rather have carriers abolish contracts and charge full retail price for all of their devices, or are contracts and subsidies a smarter option?

I don't mind the contracts for a reduced rate, but I do mind the carrier specific phones. Limiting a phone to a specific carrier sucks. And whats up with these data plan requirements? $20 a month for mobile high speed internet is pricey considering most often you can't use your phone with a laptop. I would rather have my $6 edge access on a G1 than the $25 3G. Most home connections cost the same amount, are used a heck of a lot more, and offer much faster speeds.

Well said, Sirchuk; I agree with you completely. And many data plans cost a lot more than $20 per month -- as much as $30 to $35 per month. That really is too much money for what we get in return.

I agree about exclusitivity, but not sure about carrier comparisons. I understand between Verizon v. Sprint, AT&T v. T-Mobile. They are simmilar in their respective fields, but if you put GSM (AT&T) v. CDMA (Verizon), that's like comparing apples (no pun intended) to oranges. In either case, always good for lower cell phone rates across the board. =)
