AT&T, Apple, Google, on FCC's to-do

The Wall Street Journal published an article today detailing the contents of letters sent by the Federal Communications Commission to Apple, AT&T, and Google regarding the pulling of an application that facilitates the use of Google Voice services on the iPhone.

I don't subscribe to WSJ, so I can't read the whole thing. Thankfully, CNN Money has given us the low down. One letter requests information from Apple about the nature of the application and whether or not AT&T was consulted on the matter. The inquest is part of a broader investigation into the exclusivity agreements manufacturers have with carriers.

FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, said Friday that the FCC "has a mission to foster a competitive wireless marketplace, protect and empower consumers, and promote innovation and investment." He also said that they are looking into the rural markets where customers avoid high-end devices due to carrier exclusivity.

I wonder if Verizon is behind this.

I think we have benefited by having Apple's magnificent brainchild, the iPhone, supported by just one carrier, specifically AT&T.

Honestly, I don't give a rat's behind on this. I know that AT&T isn't the best, but show me a carrier that completely work just about anywhere. Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mo, just about any other regional carrier. They all have a deadspot somewhere.

I was following on this, and read somewhere that AT&T made a statement that they don't make decisions on Apple Apps. That makes sense, as knowing Apple, they would have the final yay or nay on this. So I'm leaning toward Apple on the decision to deny GV.

I just got an iPhone myself, but getting turned off that it's so locked down with Apple stuff. Can't config my own ringtones without 'approved' Apple Ringtones from iTunes. And why would I need to jailbreak the iPhone just to customize it?

All in all, AT&T, Apple, the whole excusitivity thing with GV. Whatever. As a carrier, I like AT&T. As a phone, I like iPhone. They have good and bad side for both. LIVE WITH IT. If the iPhone can get out of the Apple/AT&T deal...GOOD.

The whole Apple/AT&T contract thing is what has kept me away from the iPhone. AT&T is not the best mobile provider. Not only that, but the exclusivity means that you are at the mercy of whatever AT&T's decisions are. If there was competition in the same space (other carriers offering the iPhone), then it would be a given that AT&T would get on the ball to stay up there with the others when it comes to technology and coverage. I was really turned off from the iPhone when it came to light that the Google Voice software was rejected. If that isn't anti-competitive, then I don't know what isn't. I don't like the idea of Apple controlling what I put on my iPhone that I bought either; that needs to change, and I predict it will.

i spoke on the phone with a tech specialist on t-mo today and i've heard some disturbing news.(this guy was super cool by the way) he said that apple is not going to renew there contract with att, and that apple will be selling there own phones thru popular retail outlets like walmart and radio shack. also that it will be supported by any carrier of the customers choosing at the time of activation. is this true? did yours sources tell you anything that might support this? i would really like to know more about this.

Yea, hopefully everybody follows the 'trendy' Apple. But first, I think the manufactures need to cut down on some of the pricing, I mean, $500 is appropriate for a high end phone, but anything close or past $700 is kinda rediculous. I mean, I know these devices today are almost compteting with low end laptops, but I can get a decent laptop for the price of some of these unlocked phones...
