Free: Is Verizon Wireless readying contract-free services?

Looks like Big Red may be gearing up to offer services to all of you commitment-phobic types out there.  According to BGR, Verizon Wireless will start offering contract-free cellular services on September 21.  This will allow folks to use VZW on a month-to-month basis with their own devices or by paying full price for a new phone from Verizon.

Basically this is good if you're a VZW customer who likes to try new phones as they come out and would rather pay full price for them than re-up for two more years of contracted service, OR if you've got a line on getting VZW devices via some other means (we won't ask, don't worry) and thus don't need to worry about getting a new Glyde at the "on contract price,"

This DOES NOT mean that you can call Sprint customer service, cancel your contract, and bring your Instinct over to Verizon to use on a month-to-month basis.  Although now that I think about it, it would be super cool to see a Helio Ocean running on VZW - just for the geek factor.  Verizon runs CDMA and Ocean is a CDMA device ... I wonder if it can be done.

no you would have to pay the full retail price for the phone john, just means you won't be tied up with the carrier for 2 years

yes, it is possible to transfer CDMA service to a phone that the carrier does not carry. usually people "flash" vzw phones to cricket. but im not sure if it can be done vise-versa since vzw is such a big company...
