Goodbye MOTO: Motorola to split mobile phone division into own company
How the mighty have fallen. After putting a RAZR in near every pocket they could find, Motorola has finally beaten its horse to death and today announced they will be splitting into two publicly traded companies, effectively spinning the failing mobile phone division off from the rest of business. MOTO CEO Gregory Brown tried to spin things this way, but I'm not sure who's buying it:
"Creating two industry-leading companies will provide improved flexibility, more tailored capital structures, and increased management focus - as well as more targeted investment opportunities for our shareholders.”
Brown was apparently under heavy pressure from primary investor Carl C. Icahn, who owns more than 6% of the company, to spin off and sell the handset division, which has been losing market share and coming under heavy criticism as of late from pundits and former employees alike. Looks like that's what Brown's aiming to do, and now the speculation can begin as to who might be looking to pick up the one-time king of cell phones at a bargain basement price.

Come inside Motorola's booth at CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas, and check out the new Z9 slider and the ROKR E8 music phone ... which we really think maybe might be coming to T-Mobile in the US before too long. We hope so, anyway. Noah from PhoneDog.com live from CES 2008 in Las Vegas. Hands-on with MOTO's two new handsets. The Z10 is a smartphone with amazing video editing capabilities, and the ROKR E8 changes its keypad depending on what mode you're using.
Here is a quick video preview of the Motorola's new ROKR U9. Although it sports a "PEBL" esque form factor it still manages to distinguish itself through its new UI, advanced music player and external touch controls Carrier: VerizonRetail Price: $349 or via ebayContract Price:$149.99 or via Let's TalkHot Feature: "interactive touch flip."

I'm "at" the Motorola Virtual Press Conference where they're launching the Krave ZN4 for Verizon. No surprise here, as this device was leaked far and wide. But it still sounds pretty interesting - it's a flip phone with a touchscreen and an "interactive flip." Apparently the clear plastic flip cover has touch controls so you can access frequently used functions without opening the device up.
Krave looks like it's going to... Nokia's planned an announcemnet for next Monday, October 13th - and has a viral campaign to hype things up in the meantime - and Motorola's announcing something new and "Clear" (as per their PR campaign) on Tuesday, October 14th. My bets? I have no idea what Nokia's gonna drop, but I bet MOTO unveils the Kraze smartphone for Verizon Wireless.
Stay tuned for all of the juicy bits as we get them. And... Motorla's MING series of Linux-based, touchscreen smartphones have been pretty popular overseas but never really seen the light of day here in the US. Sure, you could pick up an unlocked GSM MING via CompUSA or an importer, but without carrier backing most Americans had no idea that MING was a phone and not *just* a dynasty from their history books.
Looks like Verizon Wireless is aiming to change all of that with the introduction of... I personaly think the e6 rokr is the best of its kind. Although they are coming out with the new e8 rokr july 7th which will start at $199, i think it is no match for the e6, the e6 is touchscreen not so fat and very well designed. As for the e8, it isnt touchscreen (if your a touchscreen fan dont get it) It also has a small screen and the design isnt exactly what i like to call AMAZING. I think that if your thinking of getting any sort of rokr... Hmmmm I looked through the online manual, but I couldn't find anything either ...
Sorry
