For iPhone gamers only: Analysts say iPhone could beat out Nintendo and Sony gaming devices by 2014

A new report by DFC Intelligence, called “The Market for iPhone and iPod Touch Games and Applications,” says the iPhone platform (which includes the iPod touch) has potential to overtake Nintendo and Sony, possibly by 2014.

Here’s the presumption: The firm thinks that popularity for Nintendo’s DSi and Sony’s PSP Go has maxxed out. And since the iPhone has more overall functionality (as a phone, media player, Internet browser, AND gaming device) than Nintendo’s and Sony’s products (which center on gaming, with web and media as secondary functions), the Apple device is better positioned for dominance in the future.

Going forward, the analysts predict games will account for as much as 23 percent of all iPhone/iPod touch apps. With it comprising such a large chunk, they say Apple will obviously stay focused on it.

iPhone gaming has been making headlines for awhile now, and if I believe them, then it’s a no-brainer.  And still — some of the most hardcore gamers I know don’t consider it seriously. (No D-pad, no buttons at all, for that matter; terrible battery life, especially for online games; hardware isn’t up to snuff; MMO selection isn’t that great yet; etc). Then again, there are sure to be enhancements between now and 2014, which could up things considerably.

But what say youse? Do the analysts have it right? Has your phone become your mobile gaming device? If not, what would it take for you to trade in your DSi or PSP Go?

Some MMO/RPG Games to Ponder
So, while I was researching this, I came across a Top 5 list from MMORPG.com. If you’re into massively multiplayer online games or role playing games, you might find something here worth checking out. Here are their picks (in no particular order):

Outer Empires: A browser-based game that’s set in a persistent galaxy. Space fans will dig the environment, which lets them establish colonies and factions. Outer Empires is currently in beta.

Watchmen: Justice is Coming: Inspired by the movie, Last Legion’s MMO game is an onboard app that lets users fight crime in NYC with customized avatars. The devs have been good about regular updates (that fixed some issues with the costume editor and accounts). It’s set in a real-time 3D environment.

Parallel Kingdom: This is more of an ARG (alternate reality game) than a typical MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game). The setting of Parallel Kingdom is actually the real world, as the app uses the iPhone’s GPS directly in gameplay. Players — in their pursuit to kill monsters, acquire skills and trade resources — can actually run into each other on the street.

Graal Zone: Graal Online offers this mobile web-based app, which features scrolling backgrounds and commando-style battles. It’s a pseudo-futuristic 2D twist on the old 'capture the flag' game. Players can buy weapons (through in-game transactions) or guild up for teamplay with users from all over the world.

World of Warcraft Mobile Armory: This isn’t really an MMO by itself, but more like an extension of World of Warcraft that gives existing players mobile access to the in-game database. If you can’t wait till you get home, you can log in with your WoW account, and check things out — like character profiles, armory database info, talent specs, and achievements — while on the go.

Only being able to play crappy, 2d games that no one has ever heard of isn't going to overtake the best handheld gaming has to offer, and honestly anyone that thinks it will is an idiot. Popularity for either of them hasn't "maxed out", if its going down its only because everyone has one, the Nintendo DS has sold 112 million units, while the PSP has sold 52 million, both strictly for gaming. How many iphones have sold where the buyer bought it with gaming even on their priority list? I find it funny how anyone could think a phone with garbage that they call "games", which most of the users don't care to play, can take over actual gaming systems with real games.

This isnt about graphics and power, its about pleasure.
I have an iPhone, DSi and PSP and I play with my iPhone so much more and the games are so much cheaper for free ones to $14.99 I have rock band the sims 3 and tons of more apps. The games are endless. DSi and PSP have boring games.

i seriously doubt it...for 2 reasons
1. android is gonna surpass the iphone very very soon
2.Sony and Nintendo especially nintendo...knows the gaming market all to well and can be way more innovative than iphone could ever be because S&N isnt limited by the standards of a cell phone

I don't think that it is so far fetched. A lot of iPhone users don't have to use other electronic devices because the iPhone does so much. The quality of the gaming may not be up to PSP standards (I really don't know, I haven't used a PSP), but it is more convenient and less costly to have just your smartphone versus having a smartphone and a gaming device. It's kind of like the decline in GPS device sales. People are using their smartphones. The GPS devices themselves have more functionality when it comes to navigation, but the convenience of having it on your smartphone is priceless. Don't be surprised to hear that many other electronic devices start to fall becAuse of smartphones: laptops, camcorders/cameras, television sets, electronic books, etc.

i would never pick a iphone over a pspgo
the graphics on the iphone come nowhere near the pspgo
theres somethings that need to stick to just being a phone and stop tryin to be something its not
cause it sure as heck ain't no pspgo or a nintendo dsi

I think this is the dumbest thing phonedog has ever posted. 2014? Don't you think Sony and Nintendo might just have advanced a little more with mobile gaming by then? LOL! Apple's gaming products don't even come close to Sony or Nintendo's gaming products if you are really considering an iPod a gaming product which I guess you are... Since I've had one of the older PSPs and the 2nd gen iPod Touch I can tell you that the functionality of a PSP is far beyond that of an iPhone or iPod Touch. Sure lots of apps make iPhone/iPod Touch what it is but the ACTUAL FUNCTIONS of the device are nothing when comparing the two. Then again even thinking outside the realm of gaming I seem to recollect that the PSP had features the iPod Touch didn't... Good try on making Apple looks better than they are though! >:)

Phonedog's just posting the report DFC Intelligence's made for when iPhone will take over Nintendo or Sony. Personally, I think it'd take a lot longer for iPhone to rule over the gaming world because it's really expensive and pretty much a fad for minimalistic touch screen phones nowadays. It'll fade. Or maybe everyone will buy the iPhone and then all the game apps will take over the gaming industry, wiping out all competitors. Or maybe Apple goes bankrupt before that happens. Who knows?

i would definitely take an iPod Touch over a DSi or a PSP Go any day (coming from a 15 yr old). having tons of great games at your finger tips and tons of storage for music and internet is perfect. nothing can compete.

I say that it's more a casual gaming device like all cellphones are. Just with a wider selection. Sure there will be more Apps Games available but they will be small in size and limited in many ways.

It will probably beat out the DS (mebe) and PSP Go (Definitly. Who'd buy the GO?) in casual gaming but all the other games I think not. Most the games in the app store are just meh, short yet fun, or just plain crap. All can't be good. That's why you pick and choose which games YOU want to play on any platform. There will probably be apps people buy and only play once cause they suck. So out of the 20,000 games mebe 14,000 are really worth having? But who will buy 8,000 games? Where will you store them?
