iPhone watch: GPS and iControl media browser on 3G iPhone
If you're following the 3G iPhone rumor mill, you might have seen some photos of a glossy black iPhone floating around the Web late last week. I skipped reporting on this one because the "possibly spy photos of the new 3G iPhone" just didn't look that legit to me. Turns out they're not, sorta — the photos are actually of a current model iPhone housed in an aftermarket plastic case. It could still be that Apple's planning an all-black design refresh for the new model, but I really hope it looks nothing like what we saw last week. Nasty.
More certain, though, are the reports that the new iPhone will get a true GPS chip along with iTunes remote control functionality. The latter rumor comes from The Unofficial Apple Weblog, going off news submitted by everyone's friend, "The Anonymous Tipster." Anonymous dug around the latest iPhone firmware and found some code related to an unreleased app called "iControl," which appears to be an iPhone-based media browser. Looks like iControl, if it's actually developed and released, would be an Apple-built system for using an iPhone to connect to a computers media library for navigation and playback. No word on whether the system would use WiFi or cellular networks, if it would support PCs as well as Macs, or you know, if it actually, really, seriously exists. But it sounds good to me.
June 9th is the day everyone's pointing to for the launch of iPhone version 2. But then again, nobody really knows just yet.

A. At this point you can't buy the first version unless you get it used or off ebay or something - Apple has stopped making and selling it, and... Know what happens when a post on your little tiny blog gets picked up by a big giant site like Engadget Mobile? Your servers go down, that's what happens. Welcome to the club, iPhoneClub.nl - the latest batch of so-called "leaked photos of iPhone" just got the EM treatment, and now nobody can connect to your Website.
If they could connect they'd see some blurry but pretty legit looking shots of what appears to be an Apple iPhone with a white plastic back and MacBook Air-esque... Start saving those pennies. Gizmodo today confirmed what we already more or less knew: Apple CEO Steve Jobs will unveil the next-generation iPhone during his keynote address at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference June 9 in San Francisco. What makes this news is that the 3G iPhone will go on sale immediately upon launch via global retail channels, according to a source "very very close" to the launch plans. What's extra interesting about this is that the report goes on to say... Two quick but juicy new bits of rumor dust kicking around the mill this week:
First, Fortune is reporting that AT&T is going to subsidize the cost of the new 3G iPhone for subscribers when it launches this Summer. According to Scott Moritz, the US carrier will knock $200 off the cost of the forthcoming handset for customers willing to sign a two-year service agreement. Mortiz goes on to say that "Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory... Taking top honors for consumer handsets was the Samsung Instinct followed by the Nokia N96. AT&T made an impact with their new TV devices, the LG Vu & Samsung Access.
CNN's got a wire story today citing some UBS analysts in speculating that a 3G iPhone is in fact planned for launch by the middle of this year, and that the handset will be powered by chips from German chipmaker Infineon Technologies. The report claims that Apple is ramping down the current EDGE (2.5G) iPhone in order to clear out inventories ahead of a Summer launch.
The original iPhone launched last June, and its been Apple's style for the past several years to refresh major product...
