More Android for the masses: Sprint launches the Samsung Moment for $180

In contrast to hyped-out lead-up to the Verizon/Moto Droid, Sprint’s Samsung Moment kind of slid in and had a fairly quiet debut over the weekend.

This was the phone that the booth babes at CTIA wouldn’t let us hold. They were under strict orders not to lift their paws off the handset, and actually let us bloggers hold it.

I know — At this point, it’s all moot. Everyone can put their hands on it now, as Sprint officially launched the Moment yesterday. The second Android device offered by the carrier, it comes with Android 1.5 and features a 3.2″ AMOLED touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard slider, 3.2 MP camera, Wifi, GPS, 256MB RAM and an 800MHz processor.

At $179.99 (after $100 mail-in rebate), the Moment matches the current price tag and MIR of Sprint’s first Android phone (the Hero). And it also slightly undercuts that other CDMA carrier’s DROID offering by about $20. Some in the industry think this price will drop, as fans of the open-source OS are starting to experience an embarrassment of riches (not to mention upcoming flavors of 1 GHz Snapdragon phones).

So the question is, are you biting? And if so, are you nabbing it now or waiting for a price drop? Those interested may disclose their strategies below.

I have the hero and I also played around with the moment and i have to say it is a lot easier to txt on the hero , the virtual keyboard of course, the keyboard on the momebt is like n e other Samsung keyboard, like metros Samsung slider, felt exactly the same to me, which isn't a good thing, plus the multi touch just makes the eperience a whole lot better

so I am a little sad that this device has not gotten the coverage and information as the hero or the droid, which it makes me wonder, if is going to be as bad as the instinct or is just going not really worth the money

lack of multitouch is due to 1.5. Wait 'til it gets 2.0.
The 3 pages vs. 7 pages, well that's up to the user, but you can install aHome or another app to give you 5 or 7 more pages.
I only had 3 problems off the bat.
1. 1.5 rather than 1.6, but that is minor.
2. The spacebar button seems to have the sensors at each end and not the middle.
3. It should be more competitively priced.
Wirefly has it for $150
