More on May 6th: Raphael and Diamond coming to Sprint?

So this makes things a little more interesting.  That photo I mentioned the other day with two mystery HTC devices in it?  Engadget thinks we're looking at the HTC Raphael and Diamond, otherwise known as the successors to the Mogul and Touch, respectively.

Engadget's post features some fuzzy pics of what looks to be an internal Sprint document detailing the two new Windows Mobile devices, both with HTC's TouchFlo UI (and, of course, touch screens), and one with a slide-out QWERTY board to boot.  If you believe the spy shots, both handsets will offer up 3MP cameras, WiFi, and full-on VGA (640 x 480) displays when they hit Sprint's lineup later this year.  We could see Raphael - the QWERTY-packing Mogul replacement - as soon as September, with Diamond to follow in November.

If this is true, it begs two additional questions.  First, will we also see unlocked GSM variants of both devices, perhaps sold direct to US consumers as part of HTC's freshly inked deal with Best Buy?  And second, is this what we're gonna get at that May 6 HTC shindig in London?  I can't imagine HTC would announce two new Sprint phones in the UK, so we're either looking at unlocked GSM versions, something entirely different (Android "Dream"?), or both.

And what about the new look?  Personally, I kind of dig it, though it's hard to tell from these pics.  So long as they're not uncomfortable in the hand, I think the square edges on these phones look sleek - nicer than Mogul, for sure.  What about y'all?  You like Diamond and Raphael - if in fact that's what's pictured here - as the new look of HTC?

Tuesday, April 29, 2008Yeah, they look pretty sharp. Hopefully there won't be too long of a delay between launch and ship dates.

Instinct vs iPhone 3G: Speed Test!

Instinct vs iPhone 3G: Speed Test!
A few months ago Sprint unleashed a media campaign for the Samsung Instinct that pit Instinct against Apple's iPhone in a series of head-to-head tests.  Now that both Instinct and the new iPhone 3G are out on the market and in the PhoneDog "labs" I figured I'd pit the two against one another in a few head-to-head tests of my own (UPDATE: Check out the video of the test, if you like). First up?  Speed.I ran a few speed tests on both phones using the free tools at...

Good Times: Is the American Cell Phone Market Finally Maturing?

Good Times: Is the American Cell Phone Market Finally Maturing?
Cell phone junkies - or anyone who's spent any time in Europe, Korea, or Japan - will tell you that the U.S. cell phone market lags almost hopelessly behind its global counterparts.  The American market is tightly controlled by the network operators, and half of US phones run on a proprietary standard incompatible with most of the world's networks (CDMA, used by Verizon and Sprint), a combination that's long resulted in a lack of options and innovations for U.S. consumers relative to...

A for high-speed data, GPS with Sprint Navigation support, a 2MP camera, Sprint TV, and direct push e-mail. We'll have one in the offices shortly - want to see a video?  Let me know ......

Sprint Roadmap: HTC, BlackBerry, LG, Palm, Sanyo on Tap for Summer

Sprint Roadmap: HTC, BlackBerry, LG, Palm, Sanyo on Tap for Summer
A purported "internal Sprint document" is floating around the InterWeb, apparently originating from HowardForums.  The image shows Sprint's supposed Q3 '08 New Product roadmap, and is highlighted by the mysterious "MP6950" by HTC, which could be a Touch Dual, Touch Diamond, or even a Touch Pro.  The current HTC Touch for Sprint carries the MP6900 model number, so logic would dictate that the 6950 is some sort of successor - I'm guessing Diamond but hoping for Pro.  A launch...

Touch Diamond: Telus Becomes First to Launch Diamond in North America

Touch Diamond: Telus Becomes First to Launch Diamond in North America
Oh, Canada ... How Sprint customers are jealous of thee.  While we here in the States are all banking on a Sprint version of the HTC Touch Diamond before too long, our friends to the north don't have to wait much longer.  HTC just sent word that Telus has cracked open the seal on their fancy new Windows Mobile smartphone here in North America: "Telus will launch a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Diamond later this summer for $149.99 with a 3 year contract. To make the HTC Touch...
