OZ2 : Helio Ocean 2 - Photos and Specs

At long last some news on the forthcoming sequel to Helio's flagship device: The Ocean 2, aka OZ2.  The notable changes seem to be on the inside, as OZ2 rocks the same dual slider form factor as the original and looks to be more or less the same size, if a little more rounded and futuristic looking.  Honestly, it's hard to tell from the sole photo that hit the Web over on Engadget Mobile.

What's easier to get a read on are Ocean 2's specs: 3mp camera (up from 2mp), 30 fps video recording, 1 gig of internal memory and a microSD card slot, Flash support built right into the Web browser, a touch-sensitive D-Pad (hmm), and PC sync support.  Aside from that touch-sensitive D-Pad business, everything else sounds good.  Especially that Web browser with Flash support.

There's no word on when OZ2 might drop on Helio, or what it'll cost, but I'll let you know as soon as I find out.  And for what it's worth, a little birdy told me that OZ2 is going to be more of a minor upgrade while OZ3 - which Helio's already hard at work on - is "beautiful."  So if this newest Ocean doesn't knock your socks clean off, have faith, Ye Helionauts.  Or HelioBoys.  Or whatever you Helio fans call yourselves.

Our fancy algorithm says this stuff is related...

Friday, September 12, 2008if the oz2 is all that it is hyped up to be why bring oz3 so fast? OZ2 will have to be played with by the users for at least a year or two. Just look how long the ocean been out before talks of the OZ2! I like the regular ocean BUT the improvements of flash and other uploadable programs will be a plus. I will be the first to tell if it is better or the same.....oz2 will be here shortly it is already in korea.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008Hey the OZ2 sounds like something I am not going to buy.. I mean such a little gain for what 3 or 4 hundred bucks? Nope, especially since they refuse to open tethering to us. I refuse to buy another cell device until I get tethering AND cell phone for one price. I mean how much money do these guys want to drain from me? I have two phones with all in costs me about 150 a month. So I got to buy a additional device to carry around plus pay yet another 50 bucks a month? forget it, I will do without it until someone puts it all together. Perhaps the OZ3 will offer a REAL browser that supports flash and a larger screen, with the ability to run JAVA apps that are not bought thru Helio. Perhaps the music I get from other sources will play on my phone. Perhaps the PC sync will WORK instead of all the issues with the one in the Ocean. I don't know, the 3G network is cool, the slider is cool, but come on everyone has this now. Garmin works without any issues that is cool too... and 10 bucks a month is worth it to me. But the sound quality is poor, the speaker is not loud enough. All in all the Ocean now is a mediocre phone compared to what offerings now are on the major carriers. So instead of a OZ2 with little more to offer they should save the money and come out with a phone that will be a IPHONE killer. I am very disappointed that they have not kept up with their cutting edge offerings. So I suppose after the Virgin Mobile buy out happens they will fade into the sunset as a flash in the pan.. Virgin Mobile is cool, but low end. The Ocean will make a fine addition to their line. Unless the OZ2 is CUTTING EDGE, it is the only hope Helio have to make it in the high end phone market, where they attempted to get into with the Ocean last year...

Saturday, June 07, 2008"So if this newest Ocean doesn't knock your socks clean off, have faith, Ye Helionauts. Or HelioBoys. Or whatever you Helio fans call yourselves." Helion's come on thats easy. So was your little birdy on the OZ3, a CS Rep? Ha, while I don't doubt there will be a OZ3 (as long as Helio makes it that long in the Phone Service (and I really hope they do great company) I doubt they are already developing it. Think about it Helio is a REALLY SMALL cell company they CAN'T AFFORD to design a brand new OZ2 then just go and make the OZ3 soon after thats a dumb business move. The OZ2 will hit end of summer PROBABLY September according to the FCC Docs, and it will serve as Helio's flag ship for ATLEAST 2 years if not more. I mean that only makes sense. I won't be surprized if they bring out more devices during that time but none will be another OZ line. Kinda like the Mysto to the Ocean, the Mysto is great but it isn't a flagship phone.

Tuesday, June 03, 2008From what I hear, OZ3 will be a significant redesign, most likely with a touchscreen. But that's a ways off (like 2009, probably) and we all know that lots can change in a year in the cell phone biz.

RIP Helio: Virgin Set to Absorb Helio, Close its Doors, Kill off its Brand

RIP Helio: Virgin Set to Absorb Helio, Close its Doors, Kill off its Brand

Looks like the end is near for Helio and all you Helionauts, I'm sad to say.  Ryan Block - the Editor in Chief of Engadget Ryan Block - just reported that Helio store managers are being notified that Virgin will be shuttering the doors on some, or possibly all, of Helio's retail outlets across the country as part of their takeover of the copmany.  Furthermore it looks like Virgin will simply absorb all that is Helio, doing away with...
The Worst? Helio customer service needs big-time help

The Worst? Helio customer service needs big-time help

Normally I try to remain neutral about cellular carriers and equipment manufacturers, and keep my commentary to objective handset reviews and information regarding rate plans, new services, and such.  But given my own recent experiences with Helio and the growing displeasure expressed by their customers around the Web, I felt compelled to mention this to any of you considering signing up with Helio:  Helio's customer service is the...
Pantech Ocean Introduction & Design

Pantech Ocean in-depth review - Introduction & Design

Earlier this year, Helio CEO Sky Dayton said that the Ocean is the phone he "dreamt of making" when he first took over as the MVNO's chief executive.  The Helio-designed, Pantech-built Ocean has also been near the top of my - and every other phone reviewer's - "can't wait for it" list since it was announced.  Featuring a unique dual-slider design affording dedicated QWERTY and dialing pads, a 2mp camera, media player, and...

Pantech Ocean in-depth review - Features

FeaturesI could easily write a novel-length description of Ocean's features and probably still leave something out.  Helio's bread and butter is packing their "not phones" with access to all sorts of multimedia and games that users can download or subscribe to (for additional fees) via the Helio Store.  Ocean is the first device really designed from the ground up as a high-tech means of accessing all Helio has to offer.   In...

Pantech Ocean in-depth review - Display & Audio

Ocean's display is excellent.  Oddly, something about the layout of the handset's "display layer" made me think the screen was smaller than it actually is, but at 2.4" in size and a QVGA resolution at 260,000 colors, Ocean's screen is on par with all but the very upper echelon of today's mobile phones.  I really like Helio's user-friendly menus and display fonts, and text, images, and video all rendered bright and crisp on Ocean's...

Pantech Ocean in-depth review - Messaging, Internet & Connectivity

Ocean is as much a messaging device as it is a phone.  The operating system supports Yahoo!, AOL, and Windows Live instant messaging as well as Helio mail, Gmail, AOL mail, Earthlink mail, and good old fashioned POP3 and IMAP4 email right out of the box.  You'll be hard-pressed to find another mobile phone that comes pre-configured for access to this many messaging protocols.  SMS and MMS messages are also supported. Messaging...

This might be a good time to go with Helio because the deposit amount is waived as part of a special limited time offer.  You can find out more by going to the following link:  http://www.heliobuy.com/h...

The Helio Ocean is a far better phone, but you have to make sure the service is available in your area. Helio is known for having poor customer service (long hold times).  Here is the link to Noah's review of the Ocean -> http://www.phonedog.com/c... HTC T8290

Might this be a peek into our near-term future?  I hope so.  You're looking at the HTC T8290, a shiny, sleek, badass looking piece of kit from HTC destined for Russia's Yota network. What's neat about this device, besides its obvious good looks, is that it packs both GSM and WiMax connectivity so you can get your voice and high-speed data on in style.  There's a 3.8", 800 x 480 hi-res display for all of that content you'll...

    Driving with both earbuds

For the past few weeks I've been considering writing a post about how California's law against driving while holding a cell phone has done pretty much nothing to curb the habit - at least in the Oakland/Berkeley area where I live and work.  Yesterday on my bike ride home from the office I figured out why I hadn't penned the post yet.  The law has done something, I think.  Sure, I still see at least three drivers with cellies in...
