T-Mobile 3G news: Nokia UMA/3G handset cleared by FCC
Another 3G ready T-Mobile handset has cleared the FCC, but this time there's a twist. A Nokia known only as "RM-407" has made it through FCC testing, and the official documents show the presence not only of UMA-capable WiFi but also the WCDMA 1700 Band on the phone. In other words, this Nokia's ready for T-Mob's HotSpot@Home service and the carrier's forthcoming 3G network.
Of course T-Mobile has already launched a 3G phone or two but hasn't yet rolled out the network to support high speed data services. I keep hearing late Spring/early Summer for an initial launch in New York, Miami, and LA, with 22 other cities to follow. Take that as a semi-confirmed rumor: We know T-Mob will be launching 3G this Summer, we just don't know exactly when or who's gonna get it first.
Closely Related StuffI spent a week with the newest Pearl, the 8120 for T-Mobile. It's got WiFi, HotSpot@Home, and a 2MP camera. The 8120 also features video recording and a standard headphone jack so the device can be used as a media player. The post-CTIA onslaught has begun! Check out some of the new handsets in the PhoneDog office, including the MOTO Z9 slider phone, BlackBerry Pearl 8210, Nokia N82, and SE K850i and w890i. Also, we preview two new iPhone cases. Come with us through the magical land of Nokia's CTIA booth. Make a DJ request. Watch the giant TV. And get a demo of the new N810 WiMax Edition internet tablet which will be available this summer. Last week during CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas, Noah and Doug took to the sky with Nokia to learn about the new N810 WiMax tablet. To add to the wow factor of CTIA, Nokia's conference in the sky was hosted outside and up 180 feet in the air! Hands-on with the new Nokia 3606, a CDMA flip phone for the US market. This is a low-end handset with a stylish thin profile, "smooth back" hinge, and 1.3MP camera. Hands-on at CTIA '08 with Nokia's latest N-Series device for the North American market. US-ready 3G, WiFi, 3.2 MP Camera, and lots of Series 60 goodness here. Greetings from Milford, CT everyone. I'm on a road trip visiting family and friends here in the New Haven area, and also heading down to New York City for a few days. So the blog entries and videos will be a bit less frequent this week - but don't worry, I'm still working.
I've got the LG Vu with me so I can test out AT&T's Mobile TV service, and I've also got the Samsung t819 so I can check out T-Mobile's new 3G network. Both services are available in NYC but not yet... It's a great day for T-Moble subscribers in New York. The carrier announced that the company has taken the first commercial step in the rollout of its third-generation (3G) wireless network by launching its UMTS/HSDPA network in New York City.
T-Mobile plans to roll out the high-speed data network in major cities throughout the year and be up and running in areas where most subscribers currently use data services by the end of the year.
The 3G network allows much faster download speeds for... What’s Good: Incredible Camera w/Xenon Flash; Full VGA Video Capture; Excellent Web Browser; WiFi; Extendable Operating System; 3.5mm Headphone Jack
What’s Not Good: Cheap-Feeling and Plasticky; Small Keys; Music File Sort Issues; S60 OS Too Complex for Average User; Device is Bulky; Very Expensive
Bottom Line: Nokia’s N82 may be the best camera phone on the market right now, but it’s a bulky, complicated, expensive device for geeks and not the average consumer. You want features? N82’s... Nokia’s N82 has received multiple awards for being the best camera phone available today on the global market. While the LG Viewty might have something to say about that, the N82 is certainly amongst the top two or three, anyway. Packing a 5MP Carl Zeiss lens backed by a true Xenon flash, sliding lens cover, and VGA (640 x 480) video capture at a full 30 fps with stereo audio, this latest N-Series handset is a true imaging powerhouse. The N82 even bests Nokia’s flagship N95... My N82 is finished in a shiny silver front with a patterned beige back panel. Nokia calls it “Warm Titanium,” and also offers the device in white and black (sadly, I got mine before the black was widely available - for my money the black’s nicer). The first thing I noticed about the phone is that it’s quite big but has rather small, crowded buttons. The second thing I noticed is that it felt kind of cheap. I don’t think the device is actually cheaply made, but it’s all... I tested the N82 on T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area. Signal strength and call quality were generally excellent, on par with or better than any recent T-Mobile handset I’ve tried (save their latest UMA-equipped BlackBerrys). The Quad-Band GSM radio picked up signals easily, and I had no trouble hopping onto T-Mo’s EDGE data network, either. Calls came through loud and clear with minimal background hiss, and people I talked to generally said I sounded good on their...
