Test New Phones First: Nokia Announces Nokia Pilots
Nokia has launched a new program aimed at getting consumers involved in the development of new products and services. Nokia Pilots will recruit users to join in the development and testing process, as outlined on the program home page:
"Nokia Pilots gives you a unique opportunity to get involved in Nokia’s creative process. Get an insider’s perspective by taking an active role in the development and testing that will help shape Nokia’s next generation of products and services. Your input and suggestions will help us develop new ideas that will be put into action as we strive to create the best products and services possible. Nokia believes that the best way to get better is by working together."
Think of Nokia Pilots as the anti-Apple development process: Apple builds really amazing stuff under total secrecy and then unleases it upon consumers who basically are told to "love it or leave it." Not much in the way of officially supported customization options are available for iPhone. Nokia, on the other hand, flies the "Open to All" flag high and proud, and builds products that are powerful and infinitely customizable, if sometimes a bit "complicated." Nokia Pilots is a logical extension of that philosophy. Sounds good to me.
Recruitment for the program will begin in September of this year, according to Nokia's website. More information is available on Nokia Pilots Public FAQ page.
Our fancy algorithm says this stuff is related...Bill Plummer from Nokia gives Noah a hands-on tour of the newest Nokia smartphones. Get up close and personal with the N96, N85, N79, and E71. Noah goes hands-on with the newest T-Mobile music phone, the Nokia XpressMusic 5610. It's a slider phone with a focus on music: 3.2MP camera with autofocus, VGA video capture, and mobile Email and IM clients? Good. 2.5mm headphone jack? Not as good. Check it out ... Nokia goes sexy with the new E71 smartphone. Made from shiny steel and just 10mm thick, this Symbian S60 device features a full QWERTY board, 3G and WiFi, a 3.2mp camera, and all kinds of Email connectivity. The 5300 was a neat little music phone, but chunky. The new 5310 is sleeker, slimmer, and sexier than the original. 2MP Camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, Stereo Bluetooth, myFaves, and a 1GB microSD card. And it's cheap, too! The post-CTIA onslaught has begun! Check out some of the new handsets in the PhoneDog office, including the MOTO Z9 slider phone, BlackBerry Pearl 8210, Nokia N82, and SE K850i and w890i. Also, we preview two new iPhone cases. Come with us through the magical land of Nokia's CTIA booth. Make a DJ request. Watch the giant TV. And get a demo of the new N810 WiMax Edition internet tablet which will be available this summer. Heads-up, phone phans! Nokia's planned an announcemnet for next Monday, October 13th - and has a viral campaign to hype things up in the meantime - and Motorola's announcing something new and "Clear" (as per their PR campaign) on Tuesday, October 14th. My bets? I have no idea what Nokia's gonna drop, but I bet MOTO unveils the Kraze smartphone for Verizon Wireless.
Stay tuned for all of the juicy bits as we get them. And... Okay, this is more like a "Paper DogFight" than a real dogfight since, you know, none of these phones are actually available yet. So what? Let's look at 'em on paper and see how they stack up so you can get a jump on arguing with your FaceBook Friends over which of these new phones is the best.Note that I'll include the US carrier for each phone in the competitor run-down. I'm well aware that the Storm is also available in... Nokia held a big shindig in London today where, as expected, they officially launched the XpressMusic 5800. The 5800 is the first device to feature the S60 5th Edition operating system, which adds support for fingertip and stylus-based input and high-resolution displays. As you might expect from that, the 5800 does in fact pack a high-res, touch-friendly screen: 3.2" of resistive touchscreen at 640 x 360 pixels.
The 5800 also... You saw it in The Dark Knight ... get ready to see it for real. A few leaked promo photos of the Nokia "Tube" XpressMusic 5800 have surfaced, and phone experts are targeting October 2 as the launch date for Nokia's first all-touch phone. Mobil.cz published the promo photo today, and specs have been floating around for awhile now, so let's take a look at what we (think) we know: Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), UMTS 2100,... Two Top 5 lists today. This first one is the Top 5 handsets I've actually gotten my paws on in some final or close to final form. The second will be the Top 5 I haven't used, or have only groped semi-functional demos of. Clear enough, right? Good, let's get started:
