TIP: Purrrfect fix for a soaked phone

Okay, so I admit that I like kitten pictures. (I’m not really a super warm and fuzzy person, but small pets just crack me up.) So imagine my surprise when, right next to my Cute Overload feed, I see this in my RSS feed reader:

Use Cat Litter to Save Your Doused Cellphone (Lifehacker)

A post about phones AND cats? I’m all over it.

Actually, as the headline indicates, it’s about using kitty litter to save a drenched cell phone from the garbage heap. So not only is this blog post cute, but it’s useful as well. And since I destroyed my mobile phone once by getting thrown into a swimming pool, clothes and all (darn spring break!), I felt it was my duty to pass along this handy tip.

Here’s the gist:
Putting a cell phone in cat litter, which is designed to absorb moisture, helps pull the wetness out of the handset — even from its tight nooks and crevices. The kind used in this post was dried clay litter, though there was no mention if other types work.

Steps:
(1) Take out the battery
(2) Wrap the phone in a towel
(3) Put cat litter in a container (or use the container it came in)
(4) Place the phone on the mound of litter. Do not bury it inside, just place it on top. (This was obviously clean cat litter, because otherwise — yuck. Even if it worked, would you want to put it up to your face after that?)
(5) This is the hardest part: LEAVE THE DEVICE ALONE. Seriously. You will want to keep checking it occasionally, it’s natural, but please don’t do what the author of this post did, which is power up her damp G1 after only a couple of days.

In general, two days probably won’t be long enough. In this case, the writer’s screen still showed some moisture, so the phone went back into the litter until it dried completely. But what could’ve happened is a short that could’ve fried the phone.

No cat litter? The post also suggests soaking the handset in alcohol and burying it in rice. To be honest, I don’t think I’ll be trying that one. Dunking a phone in anything just seems like a bad idea. But to be fair, I haven’t tried it, so I won’t say it doesn’t work. I’m just skeptical.

Dropped your phone in the toilet or got drenched in a downpour? How’d you fix it? Share your tips below.

o_O wow i fixed mine the hard way lol. Mine was out of warranty anyways, so i got my screwdriver for my glasses and took it apart and let it dry for like... half a day with all the parts laid out separately, then put it all back together...

I did the dunk in white rice for a couple of days. That did the trick as the rice would whick out the moisture from the phone from all sides. Of course I took out the battery and the battery cover. Left the rice out in a bowl and out in the back yard. On day three, threw the phone back together and all works out well. Not sure about touch screen phones, but that last I did this method was on a first gen Razr.

I have dunked my phone in alcohol and it didn't have any problems after that.

Sauna, nice. And hey -- it's a good excuse to, you know, enjoy a sauna. =) SLYSLUB, I knew about the rice thing, but not grits. That's interesting. I wonder why that works. Do you think it's specific to something in the rice or grits, or would any sort of dry goods do the trick?

To attempt at answering your question, if you've ever seen rice growing before, it's in what is practically a swamp. It looks like tall grass in a certain height of water (easily spotted in Bum-nowhere, Texas) and it grows well because it absorbs moisture. When you get rice from a grocery store, it's usually packaged as dry rice or something like that because it's been processed...meh not sure the actual details, this is where my whole smart-tone falls apart but anyway, rice pulls out moisture and that's why it works. ;D

Everyone I know uses a bowl of white rice. It works great and is way easier to deal with than cat litter. Old fashion grits work too!

As a lifeguard who refuses to leave his phone in his locker and insists on carrying it in the guard chair. After multiple people saves and phone deaths I found that once I started working at a Gym that if after soaking my phone if i go hang out in the sauna. Then my phone dries right up in a couple hours.

One thing to note on this method is that even though the sauna is completely dry and extremely hot, If you don't rotate the phone while your in there moisture will expand to a gas and condense on the screen but that's easier to dry out then the whole phone
