Up and Comers: Top 5 Phones I Can't Wait to Try Out - Updated 11/28/06

It's been almost two months since my first Up and Comers post.  Technology moves so quickly, there are more than five new phones I'm itching to get my paws on.  But the one at the top of the heap remains the same:

1. Nokia N95
Seriously, it's specs and feature set are so far ahead of anything else out there, the N95 still reigns supreme in my Fantasy Phone League.  The folks at Nokia List ran a review of a pre-production model, but it seems to have disappeared from the Web.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder ...

2. Verizon enV (LG VX-9900)
The Verizon V - aka LG VX-9800 - is the only phone that's ever made me wish I had Verizon service.  The enV is the just-launched sequel to the V.  The dual-screen, opens the "long way" clamshell retains the QWERTY thumbboard and V-CAST compatibility that made the original so clever and quick, but also features an upgraded 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and (gasp!) a new user interface.  Could it be the perfect balance between smartphone and multimedia phone?

3. Samsung SPH-P9000
This one will likely never see United States air.  Too bad.  The soon-to-launch in Korea P9000 is so futuristic looking that I'll have to use it to believe it.  Half CDMA PDA phone, Windows XP computer with WiMax connectivity, this baby packs a 5" screen, QWERTY keyboard, and 30 GB hard drive into an origami-like folding design that weighs just over one pound.  Sure, it's too big to be a mobile phone.  But it's way too small to be a computer, and that's got me curious.

4. Sony Ericsson w850i
I still want to check out the w950i, but the 850 actually has more features if less storage space than its big brother.  Featuring a new Walkman interface and 2MP camera in a slider form factor, the 850 is the sequel to my longtime favorite w800/810, which is still one of the best music phones you can buy.

5. Nokia N75
I'm in the midst of reviewing the N73, which might be my favorite Nokia handset to date.  But what if the N73 was a flip instead of a candy bar?  It'd be the N75, more or less.  A music-centric clamshell rumored to be launched on Cingular, the N75 features a 2 MP camera, high-res display, external music controls, and UMTS/HSDPA 3G connectivity along with quad-band GSM and EDGE support.  When it launches, the N73 just might be the best mobile officially supported by a US carrier.

Our fancy algorithm says this stuff is related...

Tips & tricks: Using Opera Mini browser on T-Mobile network

I have a tip that is great for people with smart phones that are either only edge capable or on an edge only network. Using Opera Mini browser on my Nokia E71 and N95 on T-mobiles network I can browse the web faster than using AT&T or Sprints 3G networks, I've tested it. The pages load about 3 seconds faster than on the 3G networks. I have found that this is not well known among T-mobile users that I know.

Super phone: AT&T N95 ad shows up on Google

A few weeks ago I reported on increased talk about Nokia's N95 - that do it all 5MP Camera, GPS & WiFi uberphone - making its way to AT&T here in the US before too long.  That was just the latest in a chain of related rumors dating back to last summer, but it did seem to have some legs.  Well, chalk another one up for those legs (or for an unfortunate error on AT&T or Google's part). I Googled "Nokia N95" while...

Super Phone: Nokia N95 may be coming to AT&T

Does anyone even remember that AT&T actually carries a Nokia N-Series phone, the oversized, underpowered, crippled by its US carrier N75?  Let's hope that if the current rumor about another N-Series device coming to AT&T bears fruit, the response from consumers is a bit less tepid this time around – last time I checked customers had given the N75 just under 3 out of 5 stars on ATT's website. Of course if the N95 does make its...

Superphone wars: Samsung readying G810 to battle Nokia N95?

The rumor mill is heating up just a bit in preparation for next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and this latest rumor is a doozy.  Samsung is said to be readying their G810 for release next week, and this $850+ sliderphone may well feature everything this side of your kitchen sink when it makes its debut. Unwired View lists the G810 as featuring a 5mp camera with 3x optical zoom and anti-shake and face recognition...

I was Scared about Nokia N95 8GB!!!!!! Do you?

Hei, I am a Nokia N85 user. I saw the picture of Nokia N95 8GB from gsmprofile and got all information from gsmarena but it looks so bothering to me. I was scared to watch the picture. Though I have no real life experience about N95 8GB but I think it is the oddest looking phone of the N-Series Family. Who likes this phone? I really don’t know! Do you have any idea that how it...

Re: Nokia N95 8GB VS iPhone Apple 8GB
According to me Apple should just make computers and iPod, iPhone won't be successful.
Are you serious?? iPhone won't be successful? It already is successful and will continue to be so for the foreseable future. How long do you think it will take Apple to out sell the N95 oh I'm sorry it already has- Doh!

Re: Nokia N95 8GB VS iPhone Apple 8GB

Hi,   Nokia N95 is much better because it has everything such as a good camera, music player, video player, phone, messaging, video calling, and much more. Touch screen doesn't matter when you have lot of other things. According to me Apple should just make computers and iPod, iPhone won't be successful. Hope this will help you.   Enjoy!

Nokia N95 8GB VS iPhone Apple 8GB

Hi guys, I am new here and going to buy one of them so I wanted to know your opinions. Please drop me your beliefs that can I determine to buy one of them. Illuminate me please!

Re: The new Nokia N95 8GB I want one!

The 8GB version is now available for .....wait for it..........$794.00 That is soo crazy - once a carrier picks it up we should a significant price drop. I can't see it staying that expensive for long especially with all new iphone esque phones coming out.

Re: The new Nokia N95 8GB I want one!

Yeah I agree it looks way better than the silver US version, but it is still way too expensive! I would rather buy a new $700 laptop than a glorified mp3 player. IMO [:S]

This is an interesting turn of events, if it proves to be true.  With all of the speculation about if and when Samsung would bring their Windows Mobile powerhouse, the Omnia, to AT&T, nobody stopped to think about a CDMA version of the device.  Nobody, it seems, except Samsung and Verizon Wireless.According to this rebate form posted on HowardForums and later found on Engadget Mobile, Big Red is prepping a VZW-branded Omnia to...

    Mini-Review: BlackBerry 8220

The first ever flip BlackBerry is a winner, so long as you play to its strengths.  While the 8220 is very large for a modern day flip phone, it's lightweight and slick looking enough to trick you into thinking it's a little smaller than it really is.  I've had the 8220 for just under a week now, and I very quickly grew used to carrying it around in my pocket.  No, it's not as thin as a RAZR or as small as a low-end sliderphone,...
