Cell phone junkies - or anyone who's spent any time in Europe, Korea, or Japan - will tell you that the U.S. cell phone market lags almost hopelessly behind its global counterparts. The American market is tightly controlled by the network operators, and half of US phones run on a proprietary standard incompatible with most of the world's networks (CDMA, used by Verizon and Sprint), a combination that's long resulted in a lack of options and innovations for U.S. consumers relative to... Oh, Canada ... How Sprint customers are jealous of thee. While we here in the States are all banking on a Sprint version of the HTC Touch Diamond before too long, our friends to the north don't have to wait much longer. HTC just sent word that Telus has cracked open the seal on their fancy new Windows Mobile smartphone here in North America:
"Telus will launch a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Diamond later this summer for $149.99 with a 3 year contract. To make the HTC Touch... TmoNews has a little more dirt on the upcoming Shadow II, and whlie its nothing groundbreaking it's at least promising. The next-gen Shadow looks much like the current version, with a few more rounded corners and some other cosmetic updates. The big deal here is that it looks like Shadow II will support TMo's Hotspot@Home UMA calling service, making it the carrier's first H@H-compatible WindowsMobile device.While it'd be nice to see a high-end T-Mobile device with 3G support, I... JAMP's got the skinny on the HTC Raphael, which is basically the QWERTY-packing variant of the recently announced Touch Diamond smartphone that's got everyone all in a tizzy (and rightly so). Raphael has shown up with a T-Mobile logo slapped on the front, which means it's the "MDA Vario IV" and meant for European markets. But odds are we'll see a CDMA variant of this bad-boy as Sprint's Mogul successor before too long.The MDA Vario IV is a tri-band GSM device with a full VGA... Phone Magazine by way of Android Community has posted video and a ton of pictures of the latest build of Google's Android mobile phone OS as demoed at the Google I/O conference today in San Francisco. Engadget Mobile's Joshua Topolsky claims the device in the demo video is, in fact, the long-rumored HTC Dream. He writes,... As expected, HTC today announced the Touch Diamond, a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone featuring a seriously overhauled touch-friendly interface and slim 10.7mm profile. The Taiwanese company launched the phone at a press event in London and announced that it will be available on UK carrier Orange in June, with other carriers and regions to follow thereafter. No word was given on availability in the US - HTC traditionally releases unlocked GSM versions of its handsets and also has... I had to take Friday off from rumors and leaks, thanks to a week of being annoyed at the blogosphere for some erroneous reporting on T-Mobile's 3G launch in New York City (of course it's data and not just voice, yeesh) and some annoyingly snarky sports blogs I read. So, you know, I held a blog strike. Well, not really. But I stayed clear for a day.
Of course now I'm right back to rumor mongering ... I mean, reporting ... and the news right now is about HTC. ... Hot off the UPS truck it's the HTC Touch, but in white, and running on Verizon. VZW launched the XV6900 at CTIA, and it's currently available only through the online store (should be in retail outlets April 30). So if you haven't had the chance to check one out yet, don't worry - we got ya covered.
Essentially the same device as the Touch that launched on Sprint last year, the XV900 is a slim touchscreen smartphone running Windows Mobile 6 professional topped off by HTC's handy... So this makes things a little more interesting. That photo I mentioned the other day with two mystery HTC devices in it? Engadget thinks we're looking at the HTC Raphael and Diamond, otherwise known as the successors to the Mogul and Touch, respectively.
Engadget's post features some fuzzy pics of what looks to be an internal Sprint document detailing the two new Windows Mobile devices, both with HTC's TouchFlo UI (and, of course, touch screens), and one with a slide-out... With HTC planning a big media event for May 6th and Summer just around the corner after that, you'd have to think we'll being seeing the first Android phone before too long, right? For those who can't wait here's a video clip to tide you over: Boy Genius Report found (via WM Experts) this semi-watchable video of Android running on an HTC TyTN II smartphone.
What makes this extra-interesting is that the android install isn't replacing the Windows Mobile OS native to the TyTN II. ... Keep an eye on HTC this year. Not only did they host their own booth at CTIA for the first time ever last week in Vegas, but they've also inked a deal to sell the unlocked Touch Dual smartphone in Best Buy outlets across the US starting in a few months. HTC's been building quality devices for other companies for awhile now, but this year it seems they're also taking aim at building a brand that consumers will recognize on its own.
That said, the invitations sent out this week to... Noah goes hands on with the HTC Shift in this video, and learns what this CDMA version for the Sprint network can do. This ultramobile PC is a windows touchscreen device that uses Vista, and can run via WiFi or EVDO connection via Sprint. The HTC Shift also offers a Snap View interface which highlights your "day at a glance". |
