Nokia News
T-Mobile may finally have launched their 3G network, but they're still lagging in the high-tech handset department. But everyone's favorite #4 carrier (okay, they're the only #4 carrier) definitely tries as hard as they can to make up for their relative lack of tech by providing as much value as they possibly can. Point in case: Today's announcements of two new low-end HotSpot@Home phones and pro-rated Early Termination Fees.
The new phones are fairly humdrum save for their... The 5300 was a neat little music phone, but chunky. The new 5310 is sleeker, slimmer, and sexier than the original. 2MP Camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, Stereo Bluetooth, myFaves, and a 1GB microSD card. And it's cheap, too! Today Nokia officially unveiled the E66 and the E71 smartphone that sports a full QWERTY keyboard. Although the E66 is a sleek slider, and the E71 comes candy-bar style, the devices both support Microsoft exchange and are set to be messaging devices at the core.
Blutetooth compatibility, GPS, expandable memory perfect for a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash come standard on both handsets.
Sadly, they won’t be available until next (the third) quarter of this... Nokia today made a bunch of fashion-conscious power users happy with the official unveiling of the E66 and E71 smartphones. The two handsets more or less share the same specs, but rock different form factors: The E66 is a slider with a standard dialing/T9-style keypad, while the E71 is a 10mm thin candybar with a full QWERTY keyboard. Personally, I think the E71 looks pretty hot - like a BlackJack II or Moto Q9, but built by Mercedes-Benz instead of Honda.
Specs-wise, look for... In January, our own Noah Kravitz reported that the Nokia E71 would be available in the second quarter of this year. Well, we are ready for the roll out!
Peter Ha at Crunchgear posted images of the E71 smartphone this weekend that look sexy and sleek. Based on the other recent Nokia offerings, this should be a fully loaded device. Earlier reports claim that it will come packed with a 10mm thin body with a 3mp camera, WiFi, GPS and HSDPA support.
Poor MegaDoug was all set to hit up the big T-Mobile/Nokia launch party in NYC last night but he got ravaged by a nasty bug of some sort and was stuck at home sipping ginger ale and hoping to get some sleep at long last. Feel better, Doug. Me, I'm back home in California and so couldn't make it to the shindig. No matter, though, it's the phone you're interested in, not the party.T-Mobile's going to release the Nokia 5310 on May 28th, for the low low price of $49.99 after... What’s Good: Incredible Camera w/Xenon Flash; Full VGA Video Capture; Excellent Web Browser; WiFi; Extendable Operating System; 3.5mm Headphone Jack
What’s Not Good: Cheap-Feeling and Plasticky; Small Keys; Music File Sort Issues; S60 OS Too Complex for Average User; Device is Bulky; Very Expensive
Bottom Line: Nokia’s N82 may be the best camera phone on the market right now, but it’s a bulky, complicated, expensive device for geeks and not the average consumer. You want features? N82’s... Nokia’s N82 has received multiple awards for being the best camera phone available today on the global market. While the LG Viewty might have something to say about that, the N82 is certainly amongst the top two or three, anyway. Packing a 5MP Carl Zeiss lens backed by a true Xenon flash, sliding lens cover, and VGA (640 x 480) video capture at a full 30 fps with stereo audio, this latest N-Series handset is a true imaging powerhouse. The N82 even bests Nokia’s flagship N95... My N82 is finished in a shiny silver front with a patterned beige back panel. Nokia calls it “Warm Titanium,” and also offers the device in white and black (sadly, I got mine before the black was widely available - for my money the black’s nicer). The first thing I noticed about the phone is that it’s quite big but has rather small, crowded buttons. The second thing I noticed is that it felt kind of cheap. I don’t think the device is actually cheaply made, but it’s all... I tested the N82 on T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area. Signal strength and call quality were generally excellent, on par with or better than any recent T-Mobile handset I’ve tried (save their latest UMA-equipped BlackBerrys). The Quad-Band GSM radio picked up signals easily, and I had no trouble hopping onto T-Mo’s EDGE data network, either. Calls came through loud and clear with minimal background hiss, and people I talked to generally said I sounded good on their... I left my iPhone behind in search of a top-notch camera phone. I found one in the Nokia N82. Problem is the camera didn’t make up for all of the other things I liked about iPhone - and also like about a number of other newer handsets — that the N82 doesn’t offer. Market emphasis right now is about marrying features to usability and providing consumers with devices that do it all, are reasonably easy and fun to use, and look good when you take them out of your pocket or... Well, that didn't take long.
My big switch away from the iPhone to the Nokia N82 as my daily cell? I think I'm over it. In part I have to blame the post-CTIA deluge of new devices that have come into the PhoneDog office over the past few weeks. With so many new phones to try out, how can I limit myself to just one (I'm happily married, so being polygamous with gadgets is my vice)?
More than that, though, the N82's lack of style and fun got to me. Having a top-notch...
