Greetings from Milford, CT everyone. I'm on a road trip visiting family and friends here in the New Haven area, and also heading down to New York City for a few days. So the blog entries and videos will be a bit less frequent this week - but don't worry, I'm still working.
I've got the LG Vu with me so I can test out AT&T's Mobile TV service, and I've also got the Samsung t819 so I can check out T-Mobile's new 3G network. Both services are available in NYC but not yet... It's a great day for T-Moble subscribers in New York. The carrier announced that the company has taken the first commercial step in the rollout of its third-generation (3G) wireless network by launching its UMTS/HSDPA network in New York City.
T-Mobile plans to roll out the high-speed data network in major cities throughout the year and be up and running in areas where most subscribers currently use data services by the end of the year.
The 3G network allows much faster download speeds for... German newspaper Spiegel's online outlet ran a story Saturday about a possible takeover in the offing that would shake up the US cell phone market in a big way. According to Spiegel Online, Deutsche Telekom - the parent company of T-Mobile Europe and T-Mobile USA - is eyeing an acquisition of Sprint, which would effectively mean the merger of the US's #3 and #4 mobile carriers.
Between Sprint Nextel's recent share price drop and the strength of the euro as compared to the dollar, DT... Hiptop3.com seems to have the juice on the forthcoming T-Mobile Sidekick Gekko, also possibly known as "Aspen" and codename: Style2. Looks like Gekko will take the place of the now-defunct Sidekick ID at the low-end of the SK lineup, and will feature some kind of color-changeable front faceplates (hence the moniker) and other customizations.
Gekko may also use the same Sharp LCD display currently found on Sidekick LX, and a feature set to match the LX, or close to it. Odds... I had to take Friday off from rumors and leaks, thanks to a week of being annoyed at the blogosphere for some erroneous reporting on T-Mobile's 3G launch in New York City (of course it's data and not just voice, yeesh) and some annoyingly snarky sports blogs I read. So, you know, I held a blog strike. Well, not really. But I stayed clear for a day.
Of course now I'm right back to rumor mongering ... I mean, reporting ... and the news right now is about HTC. ... Come forth from your shame, T-Mobile faithful. At least if you live in the Big Apple.
Tmonews is dead certain T-Mobile will be lighting up New York City with their glorious new 3G network as soon as today, Thursday May 1. The months of speculating every time an exec cast a sideways glance at a reporter, or the FCC cleared another UMTS-capable handset for the US' #4 cellular carrier may finally be over.
According to the site, T-Mob will be flipping the switch in NYC first,... I spent a week with the newest Pearl, the 8120 for T-Mobile. It's got WiFi, HotSpot@Home, and a 2MP camera. The 8120 also features video recording and a standard headphone jack so the device can be used as a media player. Another 3G ready T-Mobile handset has cleared the FCC, but this time there's a twist. A Nokia known only as "RM-407" has made it through FCC testing, and the official documents show the presence not only of UMA-capable WiFi but also the WCDMA 1700 Band on the phone. In other words, this Nokia's ready for T-Mob's HotSpot@Home service and the carrier's forthcoming 3G network.
Of course T-Mobile has already launched a 3G phone or two but hasn't yet rolled out the network to support... And we like the traffic on our blog comment rolls,... Nokia introduced two new Xpress Music devices last Fall, and it looks like T-Mobile may be bringing them to the U.S. in just a few more weeks. According to TmoNews, the Xpress Music 5310 and 5610 will be ready for sale through T-Mobile USA starting May 10 (which is a Saturday).
The 5610 offers a 3.2 MP camera with 30fps video recording, music player with external controls and stereo Bluetooth, myFaves support, and an Email client in a slider phone body. I really dug this one when... It's no secret that T-Mobile's way behind when it comes to mobile data services. Everyone else browses the Web from their phones over speedy EV-DO and HSDPA connections while we TMob subscribers (yep, I pay their bill every month) are stuck with EDGE. To be fair, T-Mobile leads the way when it comes to cheap minutes and cellular/WiFi integration, but they've really got to get it going in the mobile data space.
According to Unstrung, they may be poised to do just that when it... T-Mobile and RIM launched the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone featuring Wi-Fi connectivity for voice and data, with support for T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home Wi-Fi calling feature. The Pearl features a two megapixel camera with zoom, media player with stereo Bluetooth support and external microSD memory card slot. and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
