The worst phone company in the world

Overall Rating:
1 out of 5
By: Jeff Mueller on Wednesday, December 26, 2007
From: Santa Barbara, CA (United States)
Experience: 3 Days
Pros: Deals looked good

Cons: Rude and inept customer service, phone did not work.

Summary: I had them years ago and had problems with coverage, billing and customer service, so I guess it's my fault for trying them again. I bought a prepaid phone from their web site as a gift for my grandparents. Wanted to set everything up for them so it would be easy to use: well the activation process requires calling an automated system from a different phone and entering 15 minutes worth of information, then it bounced me to customer (non) service, which bounced me around and cut me off for an HOUR AND A HALF before telling me that they had printed the wrong activation code on my paperwork and would send me a new number in the postal mail so that I could start the process over again next week some time. I pointed out that I ordered it online so they should be able to email it to me at which point the unservice woman became belligerant with me...I am sending it back, and by the way in my neighborhood it only showed 2 bars of service, my ATT phone always gets 4...what a waste.

Texting nightmare

Overall Rating:
2.3 out of 5
By: Adrea B on Saturday, December 22, 2007
From: Kansas City, MO (United States)
Experience: 3 Years
Pros: Better calling plans then most.

Cons: Does not value their long term customer base.

Summary: I was happy with T-Mobile until about 2 months ago. I received an outragous billing statement. After looking over the bill I realized that T-Mobile had mistakenly charged me for text messages. To my suprise, although, I have a plan for 400 text/pic for an additional $5.00 per month the charges were valid because I had went over my texts by almost 200 text messages(I bearly hit 300 texts the 3 years I've been with this company). The bill I was holding did not list all 500 ++ texts so I requested that a full summary be sent to my home. I was told that could not be done and since the charges were valid I needed to pay the bill. I asked to speak to a manager. Unfortunately, that was a even more stressful that the first person I spoke to. The supervisor was very rude, and stated that, "we won't take any of the charges off of your bill." At that point I became very upset because I only asked for a complete bill, so I hung up the phone. Since then I have spoken to about 6 different people. All were very polite, but none have solved my problem. The last young man I spoke with was informed that I would not pay for the texting overages, but would pay the rest of the bill. He could not guarantee that my service would not be interrupt if I did not pay the entire bill. At this time I can receive incoming calls, but cannot make any outgoing. I'm looking for a new provider.

Pros: Great customer service, prices and very very few dropped calls

Cons: They could go 3G and have a better selection of phones.

Summary: Have been with them for 6 yrs. When I moved to GA, FL and MN, I never had a problem with the service. Ive gone to Europe twice and was able to use my phone(quad band) there with no problems @ all. My friends were on other carriers and their phones were useless.

Excellent plans and prices for families, not the sexiest phones or options

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5
By: Joseph Comstock on Thursday, November 22, 2007
From: Austin, TX (United States)
Experience: 18 Months
Pros: Good price value, for individual and family plans, and solid service on all the basics.

Cons: Few cutting-edge options, one major issue with customer service.

Summary: My teenage daughter was using a prepaid phone, but once she hit high school, I realized I was paying $30 a month with very careful usage keeping it "Topped Up." For the same $30 added to my plan, she got unlimited MyFave minutes to the five numbers she calls most (I'm not one of them), plus unlimited weekends and nights, plus she and I split 700 "Anytime" minutes, all for a totall of $69.99 (I get my own five MyFave numbers). Calls within the carrier are not free, as with some services.

I did a lot of research before signing up. Other carriers were better for business use or for people who call a lot of different people (though T-Mobile wasn't bad), but T-Mobile was best for my type of usage, which I think is pretty basic. My cell phone is my home phone, but I don't use it for business, so most of my calls are to a handful of people, or else on weekends. Same with my daughter.

Now, their shortcomings. Their phones aren't really exciting. They have a few nice ones, and a lot of basic, mundane ones. You can get a great phone from them, but you won't have a lot of great phones to choose from. They are good on music phones, and middle of the road phones, and low-end smart phones, and budget phones with a good variety of options. They don't have the coolest GPS or camera or video phones. Their services lag behind other carriers, too. They don't have the 3G wireless Internet system, so if you use the Internet on the phone, it will be a little slower. They don't have wireless music or video downloads. They aren't stone age, but they aren't breaking down barriers. This is frustrating for a tech-nut like me, but I've got enough other gadgets that I don't mind. For some, though--say, a business traveller that wants everything to work through one device--this might kill the deal.

Last, customer service. The few questions I've had get answered quickly. Emailed help is slower than average, but I've never spent much time on hold on the phone, and they do seem to know I'm the customer and not a servant. Recently I had a problem, though. The phone I got for my daughter was defective, so they told me to send it back, but they charged me for the replacement phone they sent, promising to credit the old phone within 30 days of them getting it. This was almost enough to make me cancel service, but I wasn't sure other carriers handled it better, so I calmed down and did it. Not happy with that, as my ratings reflect. This could be a problem for people on the edge of their budget.

Hope that helps someone. I'd recommend them as a family carrier, and for their prices, and for the solid service they provide. For travelers or people who want the latest options, or who want all their cutting-edge tech needs rolled into one, maybe another service would work better. Again, T-Mobile isn't pre-historic, and they aren't a no-frills service. They have Internet, and some cool phones. They just aren't the best at it.

Even Cricket is Better!

Overall Rating:
1.3 out of 5
By: Dani Smith on Saturday, November 17, 2007
From: Chandler, AZ (United States)
Experience: 1 Years
Pros: Call 5 numbers unlimited*
(Alltel gives you 10)
With select plans

Cons: "Smart Access" Plans
Long Hold Times
Fees Galore!

Summary: Many people may not know what Cricket is, and not understand my title, but to fill you in, you get unlimited everything for about $70/mo. The down side, is your coverage area is tiny, the customer service at best leaves much to be desired, and their phones are flimsy.

Knowing this, let's talk about T-Mobile.
When you're buying your phone, everyone will bend over backwards for you! You tell them Cousin Vinny needs to disappear, and no one will know what happened to Vinny! Of course, this is to be expected from a commission paid job.
Once you get your phone, the first thing you'll notice is that your bill is gonna be about $100/mo. "Alright," you think, "how did I get suckered into this?" Well your awesome plan with a whole 600 (gasp!) minutes and my faves was about $50, that's reasonable, your unlimited texting plan was about $15/mo, still in the reasonable range, your t-zones (internet) was $5, (doesn't seem worth it, does it?) and your unlimited t-mobile to t-mobile was an extra $8/mo (???). Now go ahead and figure out your taxes. Does your wallet hurt yet?
Now, this was my original T-Mobile plan, which I ended up changing, because it wasn't worth it to me. Now I've got the same 600 mins with my faves, 500 text messages, and... yup, actually, that's it. So why is my bill still $70? I don't know. But if you call their customer service, they'll be more than happy to explain it all to you in the most grammatically incorrect way possible. The best part is, when they explain it, it still won't make sense. But save yourself the headache and just say "thank you for your help" because after they've "explained" it to you once, they get a bit irritated "wit choo," and you'll lose all hope of them helping figure out your bill. But that's alright, go ahead and ask for a manager! They'll be able to help, right?
Wrong.
The manager's will be more than happy to throw your words in your face, put new ones in your mouth and offer you "100 bonus minutes" when you INSIST that their boss be contacted.
Still interested?
Well don't get a new job while you're with T-Mobile, because if your budget is tight and set up pay check to pay check, go ahead and change your billing date.
After you're told that the change will be effecting the following billing cycle, you notice, the date hasn't changed. Don't worry about it. It'll appear in 3-4 months, when you've forgotten about it entirely. To bad they remind you, by shutting off your phone for not paying your "partial bill."
Yes, you pay a "partial bill" AND a whole bill. On different days of the month! Wasn't it nice of them to tell you about that?
Now, you had your phone turned off, because you didn't know your "partial bill" was due, since no one told you this, so they charge you a $20 "re/disconnect" fee. Well, obviously, you couldn't pay your bill, since you were never told it exists! That sure makes a lot of sense, right? I sure thought so.
So, seeing as how, you've b

Sneak charges, poor customer service

Overall Rating:
1.3 out of 5
By: Catherine Musinsky on Saturday, October 27, 2007
From: Somerville, MA (United States)
Experience: 4 Months
Cons: Sneak charges, poor customer service

Summary: Customer service has gone way down in recent years. Most recently I suffered T-Mobile's new, skanky policy of promising "500 minutes call forwarding included" in my plan, but when I used it I was charged 40¢/minute because I used "unconditional" forwarding (all calls) rather than "conditional" forwarding (only when unavailable). Customer service gave me 100 extra minutes but couldn't reverse the extra $50 charge on my bill. I have been additionally gypped by bad return policies on the phone accessories which, while they came packaged with the phone, have a warranty period much shorter than that of the phone itself. And since they were such poor quality (nokia 5300 is a cool phone in theory but so cheaply made it took me three tries to get one that even worked) you are virtually assured that something will break down.

I've never had a problem.

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5
By: L. F. on Saturday, October 27, 2007
From: Chicago, IL (United States)
Experience: 6 Years
Pros: Cheap plans, myfaves, Good reception where I am, Never had a CS problem.

Cons: I'd perhaps like to use some phones they dont support

Summary: I have been using t-moblie for 6 years since they used to be VoiceStream. I have never ever had any reception, service or billing problems ever. I still have the same old nokia that came with the plan back then. I also have a grandfathered plan that gives me 3000 anytime minutes for 49.99 a month. I'm getting a new phone and keeping t-mobile for another 6 years....unless they change their name again.

Terrible Service

Overall Rating:
1.3 out of 5
By: Kimberly Coen on Monday, October 22, 2007
From: Palo Alto, CA (United States)
Experience: 3 Months
Pros: MyFaves option allows unlimited minutes to any five numbers, making it more affordable

Cons: Constant dropped calls, lack of reception, bad customer service, extortionate early termination fees of $200 per line (family plan of four lines = $200 x 4 = $800!)

Summary: I switched from Cingular to T-Mobile to join my boyfriend's plan, thinking it would be a good way to save money. Unfortunately, it was far from worth it. After a few weeks on the plan, my job switched offices within the same city (less than 5 miles away) and I soon found out that my new office had no reception whatsoever. I went for 3 months without being able to make or receive any calls while I was at work before I decided to switch back to Cingular. As a result, we were charged the $200 termination fee. When my boyfriend called to dispute it considering the circumstances, the customer service representatives pretty much did not care and said they'd only waive the fee if the reception was affected at the billing address. This is ridiculous considering these are mobile phones that do not just sit at our house. My boyfriend also had other issues concerning his phone and service, but none of the issues were resolved. Every time he has called customer service, the calls would last at least one hour since he is passed from one incompetent representative to the next that give him the same cookie cutter answer. Even when you get to the "supervisor," they still do not seem to know what they're doing. They attempt to be friendly and personable in order to mask the fact they don't know what they're doing. Although Cingular is costing me double what I would have to pay with T-Mobile, at least I can actually use my phone and expect to receive professional customer service.
