Unlocked #4 - Samsung Instinct, LG Vu, 3G iPhone, CTIA show
From the Emerging Technology Awards area at CTIA 2008 Las Vegas last week, Noah recorded Unlocked episode #4. This episode highlights the best phones of the show, other successful devices, and a rumored 3G iPhone coming soon.
Taking top honors for consumer handsets was the Samsung Instinct followed by the Nokia N96. AT&T made an impact with their new TV devices, the LG Vu & Samsung Access.
One last Instinct video covering GPS, Visual Voicemail, and the Calendar. Overall it's a really solid phone. And at $129? Best value goin' for Sprint customers wanting a high-end device. Too bad there's no calendar synching, though. Three hot touchscreen phones - which one's right for you? This is the loooong version of a head to head to head between Instinct, Vu, and iPhone. If you're not up for 15 in-depth minutes, check out the short version for the summary. Three hot touchscreen phones - which one's right for you? Discovered at MacWorld 2008, is this the new iPhone air? It's paper-thin and light as a feather. Check out the features of what might (or might not) be the next big thing. Sprint Just Announced It: Instinct will be $129.99 after rebate with a Two-Year "Simply Everything" Plan. Plans start at $69.99/month. Super aggressive pricing to compete with iPhone 3G, huh? YouTube, Music Player, Music Store, and Sprint Radio ... And a bit of a smackdown from iPhone (!) I went into CTIA last week on the hunt for a new phone to replace my iPhone. It's not that I'm unhappy with iPhone so much as I miss having a good camera and also, in the name of being a with-it phone reviewer, feel like it's time to carry a different phone around with me every day to see what I do/don't miss about iPhone. While I get to test many phones on a limited basis all the time, iPhone's been my personal phone for several months now.
I was really expecting to come home... I spent a week in the desert staring at cell phones and came away with the same feeling I had a few weeks before going to CTIA: people are finally starting to understand that user experience matters as much as feature sets when it comes to developing high-end mobile devices. In other words, the average consumer in the U.S. isn't just looking at the "Free After Contract" section of the phone store anymore, but if they're going to spend $200 or more on a handset, they want something that's... Hands-on with the new LG Vu. Considering all it does, it's super compact and light. Touchscreen, 3G data, AT&T TV. Get inside the LG briefing room and check it out.
Is this Sprint's iPhone killer? Noah goes hands-on with the new flagship Samsung Instinct phone at CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas. The Samsung Instinct is a new 3G touchscreen device with a custom UI that will be available at Sprint early this summer.
Wow. It's only the end of the first day and already I feel like I've seen and done it all. Seriously. I played Rock Band for the first time this morning, went to an "Internet Cafe" 180 feet above Las Vegas this afternoon, and saw a ton of new phones, accessories, and services in between. And then there was the guided tour of Nokia's massive booth on the show floor.
A few quick thoughts before Doug and I head over to the Bellagio to meet up with Courtney and... Anyone who reads my blog regularly knows I'm a gadget junkie always in search of a new thrill and that I've fallen pretty hard for iPhone since Apple cut the price last Fall and I picked up a 4GB model for $299. I've unlocked it, jailbroken it, and almost bricked it during upgrade several times now and it's still my daily phone, media player, and mobile Email/Web client.
That being said I've been on the lookout for a replacement in earnest for a month or two now. Why? ...
