Sprint Nextel and Motorola Break New Ground in Rugged Phone Market with the i580

RESTON, Va. and PLANTATION, Fla. - July 6, 2006 - Continuing to lead the industry in the area of rugged phones, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) and Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today announced availability of the Motorola i580. Answering the call for a ruggedized, stylish and fully equipped handset, the i580 is the only iDEN rugged phone in the industry to feature an embedded camera and the first with a clam form factor to include Bluetooth wireless technology*. The i580 is also the first rugged iDEN clam phone...

i580 - A Not-So-Rugged Phone

Overall Rating:
2.7 out of 5
By: Bill Wilson on Tuesday, April 10, 2007
From: Tulsa, OK (United States)
Experience: 8 Months
Pros: good features, nice display, good sound

Cons: not durable

Summary: This phone is billed as a rugged phone but is not truly a rugged phone. I have owned this phone for about nine months and have already sent it back to Motorola two times because of the external display not functioning properly (not displaying at all). I do not treat this phone ruggedly although it is billed as a rugged phone. I carry this phone in a leather holster attached to my belt and in no way bang, drop, step on, or abuse this phone in any way at all. Overall, I have had phones not billed as rugged phones be more durable than this phone.

Glad I waited for the i580!

Overall Rating:
4.3 out of 5
By: Tony Roylaski on Wednesday, July 19, 2006
From: Chicago, IL (United States)
Experience: 25 Days
Pros: What I like about the i580 is the rugged feel and sturdiness. (Not everyone sits in an office all day and can carry a little skinny phone.) When I am not at work I really enjoy the camera and video capture features, as well as being able to view them on a nice clear screen.

Cons: I miss not having the calculator. It was time consuming transferring my contacts.

Summary: Overall I really enjoy the i580. New bluetooth devices with Nextel are not as common as they are with other providers, so I was glad to finally get a nice flip with Bluetooth.
