The following providers do allow for you to transfer your existing number into a new service agreement with their company: Cellular One, Cingular Wireless, Edge Wireless, Einstein, Nextel, NTELOS, SunCom, SureWest Wireless, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon.
To ensure that you are able to transfer your telephone number to a new cellular phone provider, answer yes to the following questions.

My current number is local to where I'm setting up new service
I'm out of contract with my current carrier OR willing to pay potential early termination fees*
