LG Dare Review - At a Glance

LG Dare

What’s Good: Attractive, highly customizable UI with home screen shortcuts; Compact design with high-res touchscreen; HTML Web browser and Email app with EV-DO Rev A support; VCAST Music and Video Support; Rhapsody streaming music support; 3.2 MP camera with flash and VGA video capture; 3.5mm headphone jack; Accelerometer and proximity sensor

What’s Not Good: “Full HTML” Web browser is mildly disappointing; Touchscreen can take a bit of getting used to; No VCAST TV support

Bottom Line: Dare is the best multimedia phone Verizon currently offers and the best cameraphone they’ve ever offered.  It may well be the best cameraphone available from any US carrier right now, as well.  Though the touchscreen is smaller than those of its competitors (iPhone, Instinct, and Vu come to mind), it’s bright, clear, and relatively responsive.  If you don’t need QWERTY or VCAST TV, Dare is the best feature phone on VZW, and arguably the best media-rich handset currently available on a US carrier.

Specs:
Make/Model: LG Dare
Network: CDMA 850 / 1900
Data: 1x EV-DO Rev. A (3G)
Carrier: Verizon Wireless
Size: 104 x 56 x 13 mm
Weight: 107 g
Form Factor: Candybar with Full Touchscreen
Display: 3.0” Color LCD, 240 x 400 resolution, 262,000 Colors
Memory:  200MB Internal Memory, microSD card slot
Notable Features: Full touchscreen; Virtual QWERTY/T9 and handwriting recognition; 3.2MP camera with flash; VGA video capture with slo-mo up to 120 fps; HTML Web browser; VCAST Video and Music Support; Rhapsody streaming music support; GPS with VZ Navigator software

Thursday, October 09, 2008I am looking at potential phones and I am really impressed with the LG Dare. Just recently I saw news about a touchscreen Blackberry coming out soon that looks very ineresting. I would like to see an in depth comparason of these 2 phones just so I know that I am getting the best one.

Thursday, September 11, 2008I love this phone, I personally think it's far superior to the Instinct, and let's face it, Sprint's customer service is terrible. I was with them for 2 years and never again. Verizon is much better with consumers and you don't HAVE to buy a super expensive plan like you do with Sprint.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008if you hold the phone horizontally then you can text like you would on a regular cell phone which is very easy but if you tap to the side of the letters in landscape mode you can hit the letters easie i learned that from one of noah's great reviews

Thursday, August 21, 2008this is not a phone for a huge texter I usually text a few hundred times a month, maybe get up to 1000. but rarely. and it works alright for that amount. if you text in the thousands, then you probably shouldnt get this phone.

Monday, August 18, 2008I would go with Dare. I've had it for a month no complaints. USB works fine. Smaller. Music Players are basically the same. HTML browser works fine and pretty fast. Youtube videos load within seconds.

Sunday, August 17, 2008im stuck between the DARE AND the VOYAGER. I just had a SLVR for cingular and i loved the freeness of putting pics from the phone to the computer and songs and pics from the computer to the phone from a usb that took a simple plugging in. I want a phone that meets that but I always wanted internet. I see that DAre is ALL touch and yeah texting ive seen on my brothers erases one letter back so its hard for huge mistakes with huge texters. Seeing as verizon is free texting now id like a keyboard like thing, which will also help with the free html internet that comes with voyager to be easier to scroll into and use. I do hear the speakers and ringtones is a bit muffled on voyager though. DARE only has me as it has a good headphone jack, pick-up and drag touch customization and CLEAR camera. BUT voyager has 8 gb on the microsd and no BIG deal with buying of verizon headphones, and internet seems presumably fast. SIMPLY: which one is easier with the usb to add songs and pics to the phone and pics to the computer to customize it, and which one suits better as an ideal ipod like player?

Saturday, August 16, 2008The dare is one sleek phone. I have the Alias, and the Dare is at the top of my list when the time is right. However, to hold me over I go to this forum (http://LG-Dare.com) to tie me over for my Dare addiction.

Thursday, August 14, 2008I've had the Dare for several weeks now and love it! All you need to protect any touch screen are the static cling protectors available at office supply stores. Because universal PDA pouches fit the Dare I was able to get one on clearance for $6!! That's all the protection you need. Any new phone takes a bit of getting used to as far as texting is concerned, but I've had absolutely no problem with texting using either the DTMF or Qwerty keyboards. You can still download all your favorite stuff; you just use the media center instead of Get it Now! No biggie. As for reception, mine is awesome!!

Sunday, August 10, 2008Yah it's cool in all but there's one thing that sets these touch screen phones from reaching perfection...a glass touch screen. The pressure sensitive screens get scratched waaay too easily, ruining the phone. Only apple has made a touch screen that has true quality, so the iPod Touch and iPhone remain the victors in touch screen devices.

Thursday, August 07, 2008I've had the Dare for just over a week and I LOVE it!! I have gone thru the Blackberry Curve, the instinct and the Voyager before settling on this phone. The keyboard is taking some getting used but I have had that problem with pretty much every touch screen I have used. LG's are super easy to navigate and so far have had absolutely no problems with reception. All I can say is LOVE IT!!!

Might this be a peek into our near-term future?  I hope so.  You're looking at the HTC T8290, a shiny, sleek, badass looking piece of kit from HTC destined for Russia's Yota network. More on next HTC Android phone

First off, how cool is it that HTC dropped some significant cell phone news on the blogosphere via Twitter the other day?  I'm not saying Twitter itself is/isn't cool, but rather that it's neat to see a tech company innovate when it comes to communicating with the media.  Particularly so a tech company that uses the word "Innovation" in their marketing materials. Second, my post about the possibility of the HTC Touch HD coming to...

Of course, if you do there's text galore to tide you over until those G1s start shipping on the 22nd. So what's kaziko...

    Driving with both earbuds

For the past few weeks I've been considering writing a post about how California's law against driving while holding a cell phone has done pretty much nothing to curb the habit - at least in the Oakland/Berkeley area where I live and work.  Yesterday on my bike ride home from the office I figured out why I hadn't penned the post yet.  The law has done something, I think.  Sure, I still see at least three drivers with cellies in...
