What’s Good: Supports every feature Sprint offers; EV-DO Rev. A data speeds; Good touchscreen response; Bright, clear display; Excellent GPS/navigation and voice command features; Good visual voicemail feature; 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo Bluetooth; Second battery included in packaging; Excellent value at $129 retail price

What’s Not Good: “Full HTML” Web browser is disappointing; No IM support; No calendar synching; No support for user-created ringtones or background images on menu screens; No phone as modem support on mandatory Simply Everything plan

Bottom Line: Sprint’s new flagship media phone is a very good device, even if I wish they’d skipped the whole “Instinct vs iPhone” marketing campaign.  The Web browser needs work and mobile IM addicts will be left in the cold by Instinct, but otherwise Instinct offers solid support across a huge variety of features and excellent implementation of GPS-based navigation and voice activated commands in particular.  Though plans start at a hefty $70/mo, if you use the unlimited data, navigation, and Sprint TV it’s actually a good value.  And you can’t beat the $129 price tag.

Saturday, August 30, 2008Noah, In all your great and thorough reviews of the Instinct features, I never saw any commentary on the Instinct's most fundamental function: Use as a cell phone. Did I miss it somewhere? I'm curious on your assessment of the following: * reliability of maintaining a call (signal strenght, dropping calls) * Instinct user's sound quality to the remote user (cell-to-cell? cell-to-landline?) * Instinct's quality of sound listening to a remote caller (cell-to-cell? cell-to-landline?) * What is the effect on the microphone pick-up on quality of audio in noisy envirionments (my wife's cell phone stinks when she's in a noisy environment, making her sound "mushy") Also, what is your assessment of the Instinct in terms of overall reliability? Would you expect this phone to make it through a 2-year contract? Should a buyer put a scratch-resistant film on the screen? What is your assessment of Samsung as a manufacturer? (I've never had a Samsung phone before. I've had terrific luck with Sanyo, and bad luck with LG). Thanks!

Monday, August 25, 2008honestly speaking, the instinct is garbage, its a phone that has potential but thats only if its tv, internet and youtube issues are resolved, until that happens sprint really has no business thinking of comparing it to the iphone talkless of the iphone 3g

Monday, August 18, 2008This is my first time leaving a comment but I think you all at phonedog do an awsome job. If you get a chance Noah you should tell your contacts at sprint to add more customization to the UI. I love thats it's easy and simple to use but it gets dull. And whats the longest time it takes to get all the app updates because I still haven't gotten mine.

Monday, August 18, 2008Can you load music that you have already on your computer onto this phone or do you have to buy and download the music directly on the phone? Also, if you play music without headphones will the music play outloud? Please answer my question

Thursday, July 24, 2008@Lonnie - Instinct will sync contacts and email, however calendar sync is not supported at this time. Possibly in a future software update.

Thursday, July 17, 2008I am wondering if the Instict will sync to Outlook on a PC - Contacts, Calendar and Notes. Also, what is the internal memory? Thank you! Lonnie

Thursday, July 17, 2008the Simply Everything Plan is included, and actually required for this phone, and it includes unlimited text and photos and stuff like that.. what is NOT included however is the Sprint Music store, and some of the 'tv' channels, so if you're trying those features you will be charged. Also you'll be charged for using any '3rd party' app subscriptions should you start using any (by the usual $3 or $4/month deal). (as far as i'm concerned, the SEP more than covers all the features i care to use for it)
ronny mills
Friday, July 04, 2008hey CW Sidustar, did you get the Simply Everything plan with it and still get the extra fees for overage or whatever? cause i thought that with the SEP you can get unlimited for all the things they have and it gives you a fully listed list of everything that plan covers...

Instinct: Sprint Releases Individual Application Updates

Instinct: Sprint Releases Individual Application Updates
At long last Sprint's given the go ahead to its vendors to unleash a slew of application updates upon Instinct owners.  A post on Instinct Insight details the release process, and makes it clear that the actual app updates are coming from the third-party software makers and not directly from Sprint.  Sprint basically opened up the floodgates here and its up to the vendors themselves to decide what to release, when, and how (or so says...

Noah Answers Your Questions - T9 on the Instinct?

Noah Answers Your Questions - T9 on the Instinct?
Q. Noah, you have very informative videos and think that you are great at your job. I have a question about Sprint's Samsung Instinct. I am fairly efficient with a QWERTY keypad, but I am so much faster on a T9 layout. Is the Samsung Instinct capable of a T9 text entry? I noticed in your YouTube video "Sprint Samsung Instinct vs LG Vu vs iPhone - Long Version " that when you entered the number to text (right past the 10:00 mark), the numbers had...

Noah Answers Your Questions - What is over the air downloading?

Noah Answers Your Questions - What is over the air downloading?
Q. In your instinct vs iphone comparison you said with the Instinct you can download 'over the air' and the iphone you cannot. what does that mean and what does it mean to me in a practical sense? Also, what other limitations would this feature, or lack of the feature, cause? A. Over the Air downloading means that you can purchase and download songs and video directly to the phone using your cellular connection.  Apple limits iPhones to...

Noah Answers Your Questions - Comparing the LG Dare & Samsung Instinct

Noah Answers Your Questions - Comparing the LG Dare & Samsung Instinct
Q. Hi, I saw your comparisons of the LG Dare and Samsung Instinct and I had some more questions about the two. I have some specific questions for the two phones that I'd like some answers to 1. Which touchscreen is better? Which is more responsive? When you're typing which screen works better?  I've heard ppl vouch for both sides so I'd like a good extensive opinion from an actual reviewer. 2. Which browser is better? Because I've...

Dare

First of all, STOP SAYING GET THE GLYDE! because the touch screen on that phone is so finiky and unresponsive!  But i would get the Dare because it is on the amazing Verizon Network, and i like the all around look better than the Instinct.  but then again it is a personal chioce. If you need a phone more for work (e-mail, calendar, etc.) then get the instinct, but if not, get the Dare.Hope this helps...

Re: LG Dare or Samsung Instinct

dont get either!               GET THE GLYDE!!!!!!

SamSung Instinct

Is the SamSung Instinct compatable with spiralfrog??

Re: LG Dare or Samsung Instinct

Personally, i would go for the LG Dare. Hands Down.  The camera isn't a big deal, but that is just another thing that makes it better.  The screen might be a bit smaller, but the is really crisp and clear on the Dare. I don't like the Instinct as much because it has a kind of metalic look to it. If i weren't in Canada, i would buy the Dare!!!

LG Dare or Samsung Instinct

I like both of these phones from the reviews on this site.  Is either a clear cut better phone then the other? The only advantage I have seen is the better camera on the Dare, but the camera is not that important to me.  I have to pick one of the two......which would you pick and why?  [H]

Re: Instinct vs Blackberry Curve,

Im guessing that your really not into the whole buisness aspect of the blackberry, but im just guessing. That is one of the main aspects of the Blackberry, it has always been know as a business phone, and that is how i will always look at them. If your just into texting and having fun go for the Instinct.

Instinct vs Blackberry Curve,

I am trying to decide which phone to purchase.  It's come down to the new Instinct or the Blackberry Curve 8330.  I like the touch screen but also like buttons.  Will I be able to download free games and apps for each device? . I want to be able to check email easily, surf a little(facebook, news etc), keep track of appointments and calendar, notes, How would playing word games work on a phone with no keyboard?  Any feedback...

Re: The NEW Samsung Instinct SmartPhone, IM, Email?

While I'm not 100% sure on the whole "Pocket Quicken", I can safely point you towards the HTC Mogul.   It may not be a real name-brand phone company, but from hands-on experience (I have a good friend who swears by this phone), the Mogul is probably the safest bet to go with. Its got a nice, full-sized touch screen, FULL fold-out QWERTY keyboard, and uses Windows Mobile 6.0 - the newest and latest version.  Because it uses...
