I do have 3G in my area, and I've used the G1. The speed in which the G1 loads its web pages is slower than the speed in which the BB8900 loads its pages when using the Opera browser - this is a fact. In fact, my in-law swears by the bank-busting AT&T, but his windows mobile-based HTC Tilt/3G doesn't load the pages any faster than the 8900 and that's with both phones using the Opera mini.
Yes, T-mobile is about value, and if value isn't important to, by all means stick to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, but it isn't accurate to imply that installing just 1 app on your Blackberry is in essence a "hack". The entire promotion behind the G1 is geared towards the Android market and the ungodly number of apps, which are available there and I've already mentioned the iPhone.
There is nothing wrong with improving upon your smartphone the same way you would your desktop, or your laptop. Who buys a computer and "never" installs an app to make their lives a little easier? My point was to dispel the myth that T-mobile's "service" is the reason why the new BB 8900's browser lacks speed, when it is in fact RIM's fault - It is RIM who has yet to design a capable browser, not T-mobile.
All this hoopla about "real web pages" ha! Until the day comes where we're able to view flash content, embedded video (realplayer, quicktime, MS silverlight, etc) and everything else we experience on our desktops, there is NO SUCH THING as real web pages on a cell phone.
Taya :)
Noah, please download Opera for BB 8900, and do the phonedog.com and newyorktimes.com test and show everyone the difference between how the BB 8900 renders both sites compared to the G1's internal browser. And I said before, "development" or not, today there are no true web pages as of yet.
Tayaa said, "have you ever surf on the g1 browser? you can go on just about any web page and you can choose to view the mobile version or the regular pc page."
Yes. I gave it the phonedog test, and I wasn't impressed. It was faster than edge, but slower than a Opera browser enabled phones, 3G or otherwise...

...now you're talking.

There's more than one way to skin a cat...take note of that, because it will serve you well "everyday".
Until 4G is released, 3G is great, but it isn't the same as comparing dialup to a cable modem. Software designers make different and more functional browsers for a reason - Firefox loads faster than IE...fact. Opera-mini loads and renders equal to or better than any other internal browser...fact. The purpose of 3G is many, but primarily for faster data. The BB 8900 already sends and receives email, SMS, and MMS almost instantaneously over the EDGE network. The only hangup was data because of it's limited browser. All I'm trying to say is that YOU YOU NOT HAVE TO SETTLE FOR BB'S SLOWER BROWSER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BECAUSE THERE IS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE AND IT'S NOT A HACK.
This is my fourth Blackberry with T-mobile and by far it is the best. My only hangup was the browser which, although an improvement, was still slow. However, it matters no more - Opera took care of that. I'm good, wake me when 4G comes along.
