Monday, August 25, 2008Noah, don't know if you realized it but you inadvertently showed how annoying the Instinct touch screen is. How many times do you have to press on a link on the Instinct to get it to work. You only had to press the iPhone link once for it to work. Personally, I find the pressing over and over again to get something to work more "teeth grinding" than waiting for something to download.

Friday, August 22, 2008Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Minnesota. iPhone 3g- 4/5 Bars. 1 MB- 1800 kbit/sec 0.168s latency 4.707 Seconds. (Same place) Sprint Instinct- Full Coverage 1 MB- 502 kbit/ sec 0.133s latency 16.429 Seconds. Do I need to even say anything? The results speak for themselves. GO AT&T!!

Friday, August 01, 2008Last night, smokey bar, back of bar - iphone 3G, 0 bars showing (said AT&T and 3G, but had like one dot of one bar visible). Did 3 tests over 3G, all using the NEW speedtest (it looks different and has slightly different options). Did the standard test. 1st time got 900 kbits, 2nd time got 700 kbits, 3rd time got 1050 kbits. Obviously highly dependent, and it looks like the bars may not have significance for data. From where I stand, that put the kibosh on the Instinct. The problem with this test really is they are different technologies on different networks. A real test would be to pit two phones sold by AT&T with 3G in the same spot. Pitting AT&T against Sprint will tell you more about the networks and differing coverage in that area than the actual phones. That being said, it is obvious that the iPhone has a vastly superior/faster browser. That being the case and all else being equal, the iPhone itself vastly outperforms the Instinct. You could test that by putting both on Wifi (the Instinct has Wifi, right?) and testing them against each other.

Thursday, July 31, 2008In Seattle, I get anywhere from 500-800 kbit on my iPhone 3G in 3G mode. Rarely do I get below 500, but I have. Usually that is with 3 or less bars.

Thursday, July 31, 2008I have been with sprint for 11 years and for the last 10 have stayed away from Samsung and only used Sanyo phones. I tried the Instinct, and while the bells and whistles of the phone are impressive, it's still a Samsung and the reception is still terrible. In my first day of ownership, it dropped 4 calls and 1 call went straight to voicemail. With such poor reception, I wonder how robust the other applications can be if you can't even make a call.

Sunday, July 20, 2008Hey Noah, are features like Weather, Stocks, and GPS etc, always on in a sense they are constantly downloading new information, or do they only downloading it when you click on the app?
Henry Wertz
Sunday, July 20, 2008 Iowa City, IA, Bon Aire area. Verizon Wireless EVDO on a Rev 0 aircard (these max at 144kbps up, unlike RevA cards): 989kbps down, 117kbps up. This is at like 2AM, but I have gkrellm running all the time, and get around 800kbps during the day too.. at my house. Towards downtown, it's more like 200-300kbps.. better than 1X but not really good for the odd youtube video.

Instinct vs iPhone 3G: Speed Test!

Instinct vs iPhone 3G: Speed Test!
A few months ago Sprint unleashed a media campaign for the Samsung Instinct that pit Instinct against Apple's iPhone in a series of head-to-head tests.  Now that both Instinct and the new iPhone 3G are out on the market and in the PhoneDog "labs" I figured I'd pit the two against one another in a few head-to-head tests of my own (UPDATE: Check out the video of the test, if you like). First up?  Speed.I ran a few speed tests on both...

Whats the Best Phone: Dare vs Voyager vs iPhone

Thanks for your time, your reviews are awesome!Noah answers: Thanks for the email and the kind words - glad you like the reviews.I'm going to do a review comparing Dare to iPhone and Voyager.  It's hard to say which is "better" - it comes down to personal preferences and network coverage.  Dare and Voyager run on Verizon which in many...

Instinct vs iPhone: A Few Thoughts on How To Read/Watch a Review
Things have been busy over in YouTube land lately, which is great.  And while I can't read all of the comments on every video, once in awhile I scan through to see what people wish I'd done differently or would do next time in a video (seriously, have you ever tried reading YouTube comments on a regular basis?).Seems like comparison videos are popular, so I'll keep those coming.  Seems like Instinct and iPhone are popular, as well, and...

iPhone 3G: Apple vs the World

iPhone 3G: Apple vs the World
Apple may have disappointed some phone geeks by leaving a few badly wanted features off of the new iPhone 3G, but in typical Apple fashion they're looking past the specific desires of a few in order to set their sights squarely on luring more of the masses into the Cult of iPhone.  Could Apple have added MMS messaging, stereo Bluetooth support, and a decent camera (with flash) to the new iPhone's redesign without sacrificing the grander...
