This is a good day. As bad as it may sound to Aussies, I'm happy to announce that the Hero has been rooted. What does this mean? It means the phone can now be over-clocked (see comment by enlightener), apps can be run from the SD card, swap space can be run from the SD card, and a wide selection of apps that require administrator privileges can now be run on the phone. As it has for the Dream and Magic, a new world is opening up for the Hero. Your Hero too sluggish? It runs at 384 MHz with 528 MHz under the hood!

Hey John, will the Hero work with T-mobile's 3G or only Edge? I hear T-mobile is coming out with a 2100 band width in the future. Will this make it 3g later on if I buy the European version online? I really want this phone and hearing that it's going to Sprint is very dissapointing.

Hero processor is by default clocked to 528 mhz (or at last scales to 528), so theres no need to overclock...

A single post by someone called "enlightener" probably means this person knows what they are talking about. They also sound like they do.

Other performance tweaks would still be possible, but I figure this is an accurate comment.

I couldn't find information on actual processor performance and figured it was the same as Dream/Magic.

Thank you for your comment, enlightener. I'll edit the post.

It just means setting the processor at a higher speed.

Is it possible to unroot the phone to get back your gaurantee in case of need?
How does the rooting effect the lag problem the Hero has? (as Mentioned in the video Dogfight HTC Hero vs. iPhone 3Gs) Is the lag gone or still present?

You can unroot, but you won't get your guarantee back. And the thing is, if you successfully root, there's really not much incentive to go back. If things go bad, it'll be on the way to root.

I don't have a Hero to test, and if I did...I'm not sure I would. It's risky.

Hmm... Well, after rooting it, can't you just flash a new ROM to get it back to factory settings and factory ROM, incase you have a hardware issue (which does not relate to rooting)?
As far as I know, by wm-devices it is possible.. But I'm new to Android, and very interested! :D

Yes you could flash back, but if you brick it (and are honest about that) neither your carrier or HTC are likely to be sympathetic. If you flash it back without doing any damage, I'm sure no one would be any wiser.

Technically, I'm pretty sure doing this stuff is always a violation of *something.* (If I had gotten straighter, more consistent answers from T-Mo, I'd tell you what they were.)

Bottom line is that it's at your own, substantial, risk.

I got my mytouch 3g the other day. Didn't like it at all. So returned it yesterday and got the g1. Then later that night I rooted and put all sorts of things on it. Although with this rom I have everything keeps force closing. But I can deal with that

Also to everyone else. Rooting can mess up your phone bad if don't know what your doing. You must read A LOT before even trying this id say

Try a different rom, I had the same problem now I'm running cryos latest rom and it's stable. The JF rom I had was crashing apps left and right.

Oh yeah right when I saw your comment. All my apps forced closed lol. Yeah ill give that rom a try. Just one question though. What radio should I use with it? I'm still new to the rooting and roms. I've only had my phone 3 days lol

I don't know, I'm updated to the latest radio (did it before I noticed others had problems updating.) I didn't have a problem updating at all. Here's the thread:

what the heck is rooting??

It's a hack of the phone. It gives the user and applications more freedom and power, but it can be risky. It's like administrator privileges on a computer.
