sadly you cant negotiate out of the data plan... but what you can do is buy one off ebay or craigslist and just put your sim card in it but then they still might be like "hey this guy activated a g1" and automatically bill your account whether or not you use the internet.... what you can do, and i did this with my last phone on verizon, is get a data plan but get the pay as you go data plan and just block it or dont use it. most companies have stopped allowing the pay as you go or "pay per megabyte of usage" plans because people run up giant bills without noticing and refuse to pay the bills.
