Cool G1 Apps

I can't remember who I was talking with in the chatroom on Wed night. brettm... cellman, maybe? Someone asked what my favorite G1 apps are. I gave a quick rundown of a few I use on a regular basis. There are too many good ones for me to know them all, but I thought I should give you guys a complete list of the ones I really like. There is one person on the planet who wants this information... I think.

Here's the daily routine, with some comments on my now-and-then apps thrown in. Klaxon wakes me up with a Ringdroid-edited tone that I bought from Amazon. I check The Weather Channel app to see if I should find an excuse chore that will get me out on the bike. (Otherwise, I have to wait for my wife to get home with the car.) So within five minutes of waking up, I've benefited from at least four apps. fBook is getting more use lately.

I've kind of played with TooDo as my organizer. I like it because it syncs with Remember the Milk. I fell in love with that app when it turned up on the Avant Window Navigator dock for Linux. You can check YouTube for AWN. But the Toodo app is a little heavy for my taste, so I've been using OI Notepad as a non-synced to-do and OI Shopping List for... shopping. I realize Google offers synced solutions for these these things, but I like trying out different, more quickly-accessible options.

I use the new Power Manager app throughout the day, because I work the G1 pretty hard. I can drain the battery in half a day, if I'm not careful. I take a lot of pictures and listen to quite a bit of music. I liked the Toggle Settings app for power management but it conflicted with the system settings, and results were unpredictable. Besides, the new Power Manager has a better interface and automatically changes settings based on battery life. You can set all the variables, so it's perfect. I use Locale now and then, but really only to test it. I like the idea, but until the G1 gets a bigger battery, GPS stays off unless I'm looking for something specific and I'm too rushed to type my address into Google Maps.

I've tried various IM programs, but I fell back to the stock app. I'd like to say I use FireWallet, but I haven't gotten the discipline back for daily record keeping. If an app comes out that syncs with or exports to GNUCash, I'm tracking every penny I spend, for sure. I like Mortgage Calculator for daydreaming and window shopping, so-to-speak.. I use iNetwork Test every week or so, because I'm curious about the 3G speeds I'm getting. Incidentally, my new place is in a 3G dead zone. Good thing I have Wi-Fi.

I play Trap! to kill time, and Punch-O-Meter is fun for a few seconds when you're waiting for a meal with someone special. Speaking of which, I used anycut to put two icons of my wife on the homescreen--the first is a one-click direct call, the other, a one-click text to her. I use my BlueAnt V1 for all calls. I use the Voice Recorder app for getting ideas down somewhere. Quickpedia is my mobile pedia-of-choice, and Dial 0 (zero) is usually effective in getting me past annoying phone menues.

Someone asked if I use the Flashlight app. Yes, almost every night. I'm a night owl, and when I do go to sleep at the same time as my wife, I usually get back up. Flashlight is on quite a bit, actually. I go to sleep watching videos on the Thai language in Cinema. That's my favorite video player, but the file list should go landscape.

That's pretty much it for the stuff I really depend on. If anyone wants to know what I think of a particular new app, or you notice I'm not keeping up with the new releases, let me know in the PDTV chat. I'll try to get to the forums more often, but it's kind of busy around here.

Take care
