If you just bought a Droid and it's your first Android device, you're probably still busy getting used to the interface, setting up all of your email accounts, calendars, and the like, and possibly looking for replacements for all those Apple App Store goodies you've come to rely on in the past year or so. But if you haven't asked yourself this question yet, it's coming very soon: "What do I do with all of my old media?"

You'll find that the Amazon MP3 store (Droid has a dedicated app) is a fast and convenient way to purchase new, copy-protection-free music on your Android device, though it doesn't include a handy media management and syncing tool such as iTunes. However, the makers of the app I'm about to discuss are currently working on Amazon MP3 Store support. It's not all there just yet, but it is coming. Your new toy can be a killer media player for your existing media right now though, so don't fret.

I realize there are nearly limitless options for buying, stealing, managing, and backing up digital media out there, but there's no way I can address every single person's concerns. So, I'm going for the audience that has adopted what has become the standard for the purchasing and management of digital media, iTunes. There is currently one program that is far and away leading the very small pack of Android iTunes solutions, alternatives, and er... um, e... equivalents. It's called DoubleTwist (click for download).

DoubleTwist is a free app for Windows and Mac that more or less feels like iTunes. Once installed, it will ask you where your media library is located on your hard disk. It's pretty self-explanatory from there. But if you felt like downloading and testing every potential iTunes replacement for yourself you wouldn't be reading this, so I'll offer up a quick walk-through so you can dip your toe in the experience. (cont.)

iTunes for Android: DoubleTwist

After you have DoubleTwist installed, connect your Droid and pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen. Select the "USB Connection" option and then tap "Mount." Your Droid is now being accessed by your computer as a USB Mass Storage Device. You can browse it like any drive on your computer and you could simply drag and drop media files to the phone. That's not the friendliest way to do it though, and it's tough to stay organized using that method. DoubleTwist will detect the phone and you'll see "Motorola Droid" in the left pane. (cont.)

Motorola Droid in iTunes alternative, DoubleTwist

From here, you can browse the media currently on your Droid. But wait, before we move on, you see that "Playlist Setup" link above your device? Click it to create a new playlist or import the ones you have created in iTunes. I'll choose to import. (cont.)

iTun

Now that I have all of my iTunes playlists available in DoubleTwist I can just click and drag one to my Droid. I can select individual tracks as well, but I think I'll transfer my Thai language playlist. (cont.)

iTunes for Android

When I initiate a transfer, a little pie chart that displays progress will pop up next to my Droid in the left pane. (cont.)

iTunes for Android: DoubleTwist

Once the transfer is complete, the pie will disappear and it's safe to eject the device. In order to do so, hit the eject button next to the Motorola Droid entry in the left pane. The phone has been safely unmounted but it hasn't been told to read the SD card again, which is where your media is located. Pull down the notification bar and select "Turn off USB storage," then hit the button labeled "Turn off."

You can now open the Droid's music app and play your files. If you want to transfer video the process is exactly the same only you'll use the "Gallery" app to access it. Yeah, I know. Weird. I want some videos on my phone, so I'll connect the Droid again and highlight it's entry in the left pane to see how much space I have left for media. (cont.)

iTunes for Android

Cool, I've got plenty of room to spare. Here's a shot of me pulling some videos over to Droid. See the progress meter? (cont.)

Android iTunes - DoubleTwist

So there you have it: An acceptable method of managing your iTunes library for use with an Android device. Wait a second. Some of my media is missing. All of the CDs I ripped myself are showing up on Droid, but some of the older items I purchased via iTunes aren't available in my media player. Where are the videos?  They're on my SD card, so why can't I see them? There's a reason I stuttered when calling DoubleTwist an iTunes "equivalent," folks. To learn more about missing media, read my post over at DroidDog entitled: Droid doesn't do DRM?"

Re: Samsung Impression vs. Samsung Rogue?

By Kittehsmahname101 - Nov 7 11:41 PM

Yeah you should get the Samsung Impression because it has a better touch screen and camera. I recently found out this cool feature in The Ipression's camera that is if someone is smiling at the camera the phone automatically takes a picture. This feature can be changed to manual. Besides, you can't switch carriers unless the phones are unlocked phones (they're not) so choose the Samsung Impression because AT&T is less expencive than Verizon Wireless. Go to the websites and see for yourself. Anyway, you can't change the widgets on the phone because they are in the phone so it wouldn't matter if you changed carriers because the phones would still have the same widgets but different other features like AT&T Navigator and the other features that I don't remember from both carriers. Also, The Impression has CV (cellular video) which allows you to watch television episodes (though not live TV) and other videos but the Rogue doesn't. The Impression's qwerty keyboard feels really good and the keys are spaced apart so it's nice and roomy but the Rogue's is kind of weird because some keys are placed in a different place which makes it hard to adjust wether you've had other texting phones with qwerty keyboards in the past or not. I believe that the Impression does have more widgets and shortcuts than the Rogue and more features (thanks to AT&T) and the contact book can hold up to 2000 contacts when the Rogue can only hold 1000. The memory on both phones is good and the battery life on the Impression's is longer as well as the talk time and stand by hours (sometimes it depends on the battery because some batteries can go a little bad on you. You can just buy another battery though if you think the phone is discharging too quickly). The Samsung Impression is the better choice here because it has a beautiful and better AMOLED display, it's responsive touch screen is better than the Rogue's, The camera is slightly but noticeably better, it has more widgets, shortcuts, and features, it is less expencive than the Rogue, it has a way better qwerty keyboard than the Rogue's, and the monthly plan for the Impression is less expencive and offers you better features. There are some other things that make the Impression better but i don't remember them at the time. To get all the details, go to the websites of both carriers and find out. I hope that helps. Happy Holidays!

Re: Moto Droid or HTC Dragon/Passion!!??!!?

It is a difference of a 550mhz processor vs a 1ghz processor.. That is almost double.. think of it being about 3 to 5 times faster running HTC Sense UI! I am waiting for it to come out and i am hoping it will be on verizon wireless! This is a thought to be thing going on where that phone will go to many carriers, as in Verizon, Sprint and even some GSM carrier (i.e. AT&t and T-Mobile).

Re: HTC Hero vs Samsung Moment

By JuanDG - Nov 7 1:33 PM

I'm afraid youdidn't, I went for the Samsung Moment and I'm loving it!!!

I've been playing with one of my co-worker's Hero for a few days and I was convinced that was the phone I wanted, but I went to a Sprint store yesterday and held the Moment and the Hero side by side and compared most features, and I liked the Moment a lot better than the Hero.

The screen is brighter and the colors look more vivid, my wife immediately noticed it without me even opening my mouth, IT IS BETTER, is a fact of nature no fan boy can deny (I know they will though).

Senese UI is better than vanilla Android no doubt about it but for me it reminded me a lot of TouchFLO 3D and being a frustrated Windows Mobile user that came running to Android I really don't want that painful memory on my phone. (I do realize they are separated things but hey!! I got issues)

Keyboard is important for me, the dust issue on the Hero's "gap" between the screen and the bottom panel is also a factor and finally there's a bit of barley noticeable speed difference but I'm sure it will disappear once you have installed apps and loaded contacts etc.

Two places where the Moment is faster: Boot up time and camera app the rest is barley unnoticeable.

After making my evaluation I made my purchasing decision and spent all night playing with the phone and I'm very, very satisfied. Is not for everyone and if you're more of an Iphone kind of guy I guess the hero is better.

I also expect vanilla Android phones (or Google Experience I should say) like the Moment and the Droid to get updates faster like the G1 that is already rocking 1.6

Re: What phone?!

I would say go with the Cliq. In my opinion its the best one for messaging and networking. I dont know much about its music player though. After the Cliq, I would say iPhone since it has a good music player.

It is way faster! as Chris said the droid's processor and screen are great! There are three different ideas of when it will come out, November 13th, black Friday, or some time in December. It is a phone worth waiting for and the HTC sense ui plus the wonderful specs this beast of a machine has is Verizon's first chance of beating the iphone! CAN'T WAIT! I will be getting one.
