Calling from Portugal to Bhutan - Cell

Who should use these plans?
While traveling internationally, we suggest purchasing a calling card to call back to the U.S. and other countries from any phone available. Your cell phone may work in a foreign country, but your provider may charge extremly high rates when making calls overseas.
           How does it work?
Each company will send you a calling card for use while traveling. Simply dial the access number (each country has a different access number) and PIN before placing your call. Cards are generally available in $5, $10, $25, and $50 denominations. Most cards can be re-charged online from any PC, please see the FAQ section for more Q and A’s.

Updates: BlackBerry Storm getting firmware updates

    BlackBerry Storm Updates

The horribly over-hyped, gimmicky, disappointing, bug-plagued BlackBerry Storm should soon be getting its first dose of badly-needed firmware fixes, according to Greg over at MobileCrunch, and a host of other Internet reports.  I still think the Storm would be best off slimming down and losing the silly click-screen mechanism altogether, but if you're digging the SurePress action and just waiting until the lags, crashes, and other kinks get...

Worth It?: Three die in Black Friday tragedies

    Black Friday Deaths

Around these parts we spend a lot of time covering an industry that revolves around consumerism.  I make no bones about the fact that your interest in buying newer, faster, better, and shinier gadgetry goes a long way to making my gig here at PhoneDog possible.  Given that I think it'd be utterly hypocritical for me to write another article decrying America for its greedy, overly-materialistic ways.  I love technology and gadgets...

There's a countdown timer on Nokia's website that's set to expire at 9:15 CET - that's 12:15 AM, Pacific time - tomorrow morning, December 2nd.  The timer will strike zero to coincide with the keynote address at Nokia World, a developer's conference in Barcelona, Spain.Nokia World has traditionally not been a venue for big product announcements from the world's #1 maker of cell phones, but tradition seems set to change as of tomorrow. ...

    CyberMonday goodies for Sprint customers

    Sprint CyberMonday goodies

Just in case you didn't do enough shopping on the good old Interweb at lunchtime today, there are plenty more deals to check out when you get home, like Sprint's CyberMonday giveaways. Props to the carrier for realizing there's very little that beats FREE, especially when it comes to gift-shopping. These deals are offered only for a limited time and are good for new activations and eligible upgrades with, of course, a 2-year contract.  Palm...

Our own Dr. Photo reviews the camera on the Samsung Omnia

    Samsung Omnia Camera

Hello, and welcome to the first installment of Dr. Photo. I’m Adam and yes, I’m a doctor, but no, I don’t know what that thing on your elbow is… I’m a physical chemist (which is how I get away with calling myself a doctor without ever touching people) and a professional photographer and have been called in by my friends at PhoneDog to take a close look at cell phones from a photographer’s point of view (less so from a chemist’s, although I’m...

    Mini-review: Pantech Matrix - AT&T

    Mini-review: Pantech Matrix

Pros: 3G, full QWERTY,  total messaging package, good value, feels tough. Cons: GPS isn't free, it's pretty thick. I'm loving the selection of messaging devices this season: Propel, Gravity, Slate, Quickfire, Rant, and Matrix are a few off the top of my head, but I know there are more out there. If you're heavy on text and into the novelty of experimental form factors, the Matrix should be at the top of your list. The C740 is an updated...

    Bluetooth etiquette

Those of you who follow Noah's Bark and PhoneDogTV know that kravvykrav has had his share of dangerously close encounters with people who talk on the phone while driving. Most of us have had similar experiences, and the rest have at least been annoyed. Even when using bluetooth, there are activities that just don't mix with phone calls. Some are risky, some are funny, and some are just plain rude. When you're in the driver's seat, leave it...

What I dislike about the G1

What I dislike about the G1

I don't want to kill anyone's Black Friday shopping buzz, or discourage you from buying the G1 as a holiday gift. But I have dedicated a lot of posts to pointing out the benefits of this phone, and it's operating system, Android. I think it's time that I cover some negative aspects of the device. Most design problems become apparent over time, and may not be recognizable during an in-store test. They're not the kind of thing you want to be...

    Double up deals from AT&T

    Double up deals from AT&T

AT&T has a "two for the price of one" sale going on the Pantech Matrix and Samsung Propel this Thanksgiving, and it will be in effect at least until Sunday. It's kind of a messy deal. You have to sign a contract and pay $129.99 for the first device, but you'll get a $50 rebate in the mail. Still, it's a cool way to get messaging devices into the hands of couples. A worker at a local AT&T kiosk told me last night that he was doing a...
